People in the medical field...

Anyone a Sonographer? I have been back and forth with this for years. I remember asking a year ago about getting into a program and a few girls on here said they looked into the school in Northport (Western Suffolk Boces- Wilson Tech). Just wondering if anyone is a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer or Cardiac Sonographer?

Being in the medical field is something I wanted to do since I was 16, but at 21 I began teaching. I loved it for 3 years, but I'm over it now. I need and want a change. I was looking into accounting, but if I'm going to go back to school, I want it to be something I LOVE!

So I've been researching schools that are accredited for crazy now. I think I'm going to go with Cardiac Sonographer. It's a year program full time at Brooklyn LIU. I'm torn between that and General ultrasoun (DMS) at the school in Northport. That is 2 years.

I've been reading that the general is saturated in NY, and Cardiac is the way to go. It really interests me too. soooo anyone have experience with this field? I dont want to spend all this money for it and not get a job....

Thanks ladies. I've been sooo stressed and upset lately trying to figure out what to do, and I feel so happy with this program at LIU. I set up an interview for Feb.

EDIT: Sorry so long. Just wanted to add I've been so torn also because we want to start having babies...but I feel I need to make this change before. And at least the one year program isn't too long to wait.

I am not a sonographer but I am in the medical field.

I think you should look more into the general sono program. I think it will give you more worth, value and flexibility in the field.

Can you do general sono and then add on a cardio sono class or certification?


I just would worry that if you get tired of it or if it becomes outdated(which i doubt bc sono has been around for so long but just throwing it out there) that you will be stuck and you will only have certifciation in cardiology sono.

Id meet with the general sono program as well before you make a decision.

one of the reasons I do what I do (im a PA(physician assistant) is because I have flexibility to change fields whenever I want.

Thank you so much! I appreciate your information and if you find out from the sonographers where you work, definitely let me know.

Any certification I get, I can add other specialities. So even if I go the Cardiac route, I could still add n Vascular, or Ob/Gyn at a later point.

I do agree that general might be better, but I don't see how we can make it without me working for 2 years., especially since we want to buy a house and start having babies. I don't know. It's a lot to figure out and I'm going to look at them both more closely to figure it out. Thank you!

you have to make a lot of personal decisions and weight out what you want! is this program an intense full time job? can you do it part time? it might take you longer but you might be able to work while doing it.

its super important to do something you love. you dont want to be stuck in a career a few years from now, not happy. the house and the baby will be great but if you are working a 9-5 that you hate it will def weigh on you
