Poll-For those who Hosted Christmas Dinner

I had a bit of a hard time preparing for the dinner, part was DH was doing other things. I flipped out for a minute and then he was helping with everything and got the kids to help too!! I think it was much more stressful then I thought it would be. I think with time it will get more organized and less stressful....Do you think so?

We have hosted for the past 3 years so it was what I thought it would be. Thankfully my husband does the bulk of the cooking and I do some of the sides and app's, cleaning, serving, etc.. I dont think I would even consider hosting if my husband wasnt working at as hard as I was.

The only thing that I find really annoying and adds to the stress level is that my husbands family starts eating the MOMENT the food is put in front of them instead of waiting for everyone to be served like human beings. So by the time I have served everyone and I sit down to eat, its time to clear the plates and serve the next course. Ugh!! So we never get to eat more than a morseful on Christmas Day.

I have not hosted Xmas dinner YET,(I know my time is coming), however I must say that teamwork is very essential. I always help my aunt when she hosts. I always do the appetizers and I do a lot of the hostessing while she cooks.

I think it is entirely too much work to try and take on yourself.

This was my very first year hosting Christmas, so the preparations leading up to Christmas day was extremely stressful! When your house is not fully 'set up' yet, it is a lot harder to pull everything together. But, Jeff and I worked our butts off, and we were surprised by how nicely everything came together. Both families enjoyed all of the little touches we added to the house and to our table, and our efforts really showed.

But, on Christmas day, I could not have appreciated my brother's girlfriend more - she was the single biggest help to me in my efforts to keep the food hot and the guests happy. It was definitely a team effort!

Claud: I think that was my problem. We are still in some boxes, and instead of my DH helping me he was trying to put up molding (which is not done yet either) so until I flipped out and said the food is more important then the molding, then he started helping. Then I had to do it all again today (Sunday) because it was my DH's 40th Birthday. So I think, knowing I had to do it twice was adding to the stress!

Stef It really bothers me when people don't wait for everyone to be served....so I feel for you!!

Do you think it gets easier with time?

Re: Poll-For those who Hosted Christmas Dinner

I have not hosted Christmas yet but we were supposed to host Christmas Eve with my DH's family but then things changed when his brother called us on thanksgiving and asked us if he could do it because they had just had a second baby and didn't want to really travel on Christmas Eve night so we agreed and actually come to think of it I was a little relieved because I didn't have my kitchen yet. I just recently had it installed and we're still in the process of putting things away, etc. etc. so i'm kind of thankful for that but we are doing it next christmas eve. I don't mind hosting it's just that I feel useless because I am not much of a cook. I can make some basic easy stuff but I can't make those big fancy holiday meals. My DH says that we have a year to learn how to cook or we can always cater but that would make me feel like a failure but then what other choice would I have if I can't cook those big fancy meals...Actually we are having a small get together with some close friends on new years eve and we're having food catered, I mean is that such a bad thing to do for a holiday celebration? what do you ladies think?

I love cooking so, I had organized 'the menu' since I finished Thanksgiving.

The only thing I wish is that I had more spare time to decorate the house more than we did. Oh well, it looked cute w/ our tree and things in the windows..... there's always next year. I've learned, I've got to plan the house way in advance too.
