Poll: Your toughts/feelings on tonights debate?

Original post by milana

I was just wondering whether this debate reconfirmed who you were planning on voting for or not?

I planned on voting for McCain before....and now after watching tonights debate i can with certainty say...that I will 100% be voting for McCain! I think he did a great job addressing all of the issues and questions tonight

ETA: For some reason i put the word 'election' instead of debate in my poll...sorry was typing too fast and you cant edit polls

how is mccain wrong for wanting to 'finish' the war in iraq, but obama is right for wanting to 'finish' the job in afhanistan? and how mccain was pulling the sympathy card with mentioning his bracelet, but obama was any better for mentioning his.

plus, still don't see how agreeing w/ mccain on so many points shows he is all about change. didnt think he did a good job w/ that personally.

There are people who feel Obama was disprespectful for calling McCain by hist first name and the there are those who felt it disrespectful that McCain refused to even look Obama's way. I dont even want to focus on that. I dont think either candidate was trying to disrespect the other. If anything I would rather they speak to each other on a first name basis, it made me feel like thats the way they would speak to each other off camera. Unless people feel it was disrespectful in a 'respecting your elders' kind of way where you address someone older than you by their title.... I dunno neither thing really bothered me. Theyre obviously not best friends.

We went into Iraq under the false pretenses that they had WMD's. They were wrong about that. McCain also said it was going to be quick. Its not quick. There are people who have no clue why were even IN Iraq or why we went in there in the first place. Our threat was with Afghanistan, 9/11 was Al Qaida yet that doesnt seem to be our focus anymore. Were fighting in Iraq while Bin laden is in a cave somewhere still trying to plot destruction yet were trying to stabilize Iraq. It doesnt make sense to me. The focus of the war was lost and if I had lost someone in 9/11 Id be pretty upset right now.

I dont think Obama was any better for bringing up his bracelet but I took it as his way of saying almost condescendingly, I have one too and yours stands for that, mine stands for this. GREAT lets get back to what were going to do.

I just wanted to add, off topic, if I NEVER heard the word 'Maverick' again, I would be one happy lady.

I think both should be taken care of. Don't think Afghanistan should've been forgotten about so i agree with Obama on that but i also dont think he should've said 'no more soldiers should die' but then bring up this point, bc its not about no more soldiers dying then its about just fighting a different war for him, so I think that hurt him a little bit bc it is hypocritical.

BUT then i also agree with Mccain that first then need to come up with a strategy for Afghanistan and one where after the war they dont leave the ppl of Afghanistan in the same mess they left them after helping them fight against Russia. Which by the way is the reason for 9/11. Bin laden was trained by the UNITED STATES, we were on their side at the time and he helped us. BUT after we went in and did what we had to do, we left the country in horrible conditions and didnt care that there were ppl left with no homes and starving. Which is why bin laden is upset with the US to begin with and what started all of this. He resented the US for forgetting about his people and not caring about the effects after the war. So this is why i do believe we have to think about this more carefully and not get ourselves in the same mess we did last time.

i see what youre saying, but iraq is a situation we're in now and have to deal with now, regardless of what got us into it. and i thought that was a great point that mccain brought up... now we have to deal with when and how to get out and we need someone who understands that whole process and how dangerous it can be.i dont think we need someone who is going to set a date and pull right out of iraq (...we have no idea what will happen!!!). we do need a plan for afghanistan but im not sure obama has it right or the right timing or the safest plan for leaving iraq.

Yeah I know it isn't important at all but it was something that I kept noticing.

And seriously, I am beginning to hate the term 'Main Street'

i noticed the same things, also about Mccain not looking at Obama once. And then when Mccain said main street after obama said it, i thought 'ok enough with main street'

And I do agree with you on that. We are there and we cant just leave. Or just set a date and pull them out like that. It has to be carefully and strategically planned. I will agree on that. Obama says the removal of our troops needs to be 'responsible and phased'.

'Under the Obama-Biden plan, a residual force will remain in Iraq and in the region to conduct targeted counter-terrorism missions against al Qaeda in Iraq and to protect American diplomatic and civilian personnel. They will not build permanent bases in Iraq, but will continue efforts to train and support the Iraqi security forces as long as Iraqi leaders move toward political reconciliation and away from sectarianism.'

Of course this is something Im reading and agree with but doesnt mean it will happen this way. Im hoping this is what can happen in the future.

I'm so excited for the VP debate. It will be hysterical... Palin ' I know a lot about foreign policy in Russia because well ...well....it's just so close to Alaska' enough said If McCain had any hope of gaining my vote he totally lost it by having Palin as his running mate. Blech.

Heehee...did she REALLY say that?? OMG
I am 100% certain of who I am voting for after I saw the debate yesterday....even though I didn't see any sparks fly and there was no 'defining moment,' I know what each candidate stands for and what I believe in and support.

Re: Poll: Your toughts/feelings on tonights debate?

I watched the debate from beginning to end and if someone will vote for McCain/Palin because simply their campaign claims that Obama is definetely sending troops to Pakistan/Afghanistan (which he did not) that is very short sighted. The big scam that the Republican had been able to pulled on middle class American has been getting them to vote against their economic interest. Its unbelievable how people will response to the fear mongering tactics that they used.

And regarding the needs for the troops for Afghanistan, if we hadn't gone to Iraq (which my brother was sent there to serve), a country that pose no treat to us, we could have concentrated on Afghanistan, the central front of 'war on terror' in the first place. Its only because we were side track from the primary mission because of the neo-cons belief that democracy can be created from the barrel of the gun that we have left the Afghanistan fall back to the state that it is in.

In regards to tax plan, if you do some investigation, unless you're extremely wealthy ( or a least making $200k plus), Obama's plan will save you more money to the middle class family.

Im sorry but there are a few things wrong with what you stated in your first paragraph..not sure where youre getting your research from...i also watched the debate from beginning to end and Obama's words were that as soon as he becomes president of the U.S. we are sending troops to Afghanistan to find Bin Laden. How could you say his campaign doesnt support this when he stated it during the debates yesterday? And that is not my primary reason for voting for McCain however i can not speak for others only myself.

And in regards to his tax plan....according to his new plan this new tax rate would give the United States one of the highest tax rates among all developed countries. And in effect by raising U.S. taxes so high, investment and economic growth would be reduced in the long run as resources are squandered in an attempt to avoid taxation. His plan is a temporary solution for our economy with major consequences down the road. Another one being that more and more businesses will start moving and more individuals will be sending their assets abroad to take advantage of lower tax rates overseas.

According to economists Obama's plan calls for a tax increase so large that every class will be affected not just people with incomes of 200k+ because studies show that countries such as Sweden and Hungary for example, (which have very high taxes) and if we implement Obama's system we will actually be higher than them which is scary...shows that they have a very high unemployment rate as well...Sweden's for example being close to 20%..The costs in economic terms of such high taxes are real down the line and they will certainly be affecting everybody if that happens.

I was 100% sure of who I was voting for before the debate. That being said I was kind of upset with how BOTH candidates debated. I must say I fell in and out of a deep sleep. Hey that could have been the tylenol cold or the fever I am just hoping my candidate steps it up a bit for the next one. I was hoping for a better 'fight'

I think it's interesting that not one of our votes changed post debate. I wonder if that is a reflection of how as people we skew our take on certain issues based on what we already believe/think? Maybe it is also because these two candidates appear to be closely matched? Interesting never-the-less.

The figures you posted are for income tax rates only and doesnt take into account other taxing. When i was talking about taxing i wasnt only referring to income tax. If you look up Sweden and Hungary's unemployment rate and tax system you will see that they are one of the highest in the world.

I agree, he did say it loud and clear that he would send troops to afghanistan so its not a lie, and he has said it publically before the debates too.

and with the whole tax thing, i dont care what plans anybody had, now with the crisis if the bail out plan goes through then we will have higher taxes. I am not a person who is against democrats, i always vote for who i feel is more qualified and i dont like to categorize myself as anything. But it is the democrats right now who want the bail out plan which will have us tax payers paying for it, yes even us middle class people. Its the republicans that really dont want this bail out plan and dont think we should get taxed for it and that the people who got us into this trouble should pay for it.

The problem is soo complicated it makes my head hurt. It is not just about the mortgage crisis, it goes into the ability of corporations to get one day short terms loans that limit the access to bridging the gap so they can see a return. There are so many layers to it is is boggling. & this has been going out throughout the years with more & more deregulation.

& If I am correct, this bailout was not a democrat thing solely. It annoys people are classifying this as so. It is a Bush administration's $700 billion economic bailout plan, this labeled & people on both sides voted for & against it. There were other plans though that were from a particular party but were voted down too

Regardless of who originated the plan, something will need to address the issue of the shaky economy that is impacting the world. Unfortunately while I would love to have the executives punished for any wrongdoing, these companies cannot fail because it will be the straw that breaks the camels back.

I would hope if they do come up with some package to bailout, they should have any CEO's executives based on results oriented compensation, paid for their results rather than given a golden parachute for failure

PS. a great book to understand today's economics issues.. check out, 'predictable irrational'

Oh & CNN was talking about what I said about the short term loans that helped fund payroll & light bills ect for the short term... that this will have a profound effect if not rectified

I agree....why should CEOs have practically a blank check for a salary no matter what happens or what poor decisions they make and leave everyone else holding the bag?? There definitely needs to be much more accountability.
