Post office question - NOT stamp-related

Riddle me this....
What exactly are the Postal Police? All my life I've seen their snazzy cars and wondered who are they and what do they do? Sometimes they zip around town with sirens-is there a postal emergency somewhere?? Do they have an 'undercover' unit????
Just wonderin'....

I would think they deal with mail bombs and anthrax packages? Identity theft and mail theft...i know the mail truck was robbed once when i lived at my parents....they took some of my bills which screwed me over royally when the next statements came and i apparently never paid

Correct. They deal with mail fraud, id theft, consumer fraud, safety of postal facilities, etc. They even have their own forensic labs and investigators.

Most Federal Agencies/Departments have their own police/investigative forces. We see them all the time down here, but they are all of the country wherever an agency has offices.

i love the title of this thread!!! b/c its so true that everyone totally thinks that its going to be a stamp question!!! hahaa

OMG Elizabeth this is AWESOME!!!! I would totally want to work in the forensic mail unit. I can see it now... CSI:Going Postal
This is interesting because after the anthrax mess in 2001 I didn't know what else they could possibly be in charge of!!!
