Post your engagement stories!

It's April 2, 2001, cold and very very very windy! I had just worked a bazzilion hour shift at the hosp. My birthday was a few days prior and DH was taking me out to the city for my birthday on April 2nd. I beg him to change the birthday dinner b/c i'm so tired but he insists. I get dressed and we start driving. Then he gets a call from him mom saying that she's in a restaurant in Bklyn and she has a B-day present for me and asks if we can stop by the restaurant and pick it up on our way to the city for my bday dinner. I say sure. Once we arrive, we're taken to the private room of Tatiana's restaurant on Brighton and guess what? It's a surprise Birthday party for me!!! I'm all excited and having fun and eating.

THEN-

DH disappears for a bit and all of a sudden there is an announcement in the restaraunt filled with about 300 people that there is someone about to perform on the stage. We all go down to the stage and who do I see? DH with a guitar!!!! I'm all confused obviously! Well he sings and plays Darren Hayes 'Insatiable' and then asks me to come to the stage. I had no idea what was going on! He then gets down on his knee and proposes in front of all of our friends and 300 strangers!!! It was the perfect engagement! I've always wanted to be able to let the whole world know how much I love him and he found the perfect way to tell me how much he loves me - in front of 300 people!!

We also have all of this on video! Our friends were taping the whole thing and we incorporated our engagement into our love story and this will also be part of our wedding!!! video!

Re: Post your engagement stories!

Feb. 12, 2005. DH and I had a date in the city to go out to eat at our favorite restaurant. DH was 2 hours late because he got stuck on the cross bronx. We finally got into the city and we had a beautiful dinner. After the dinner, DH and I decided to go on a horse and buggy ride through Central Park. The gates were up and DH and I wanted to see what all the hype was about. He seemed to be really antsy but it was cold out so I didn't think anything of it.
After the ride was over, DH asked me to take a longer walk in Central Park, and under one of the gates, he proposed. I was so surprised I froze and left him down on one knee in the freezing cold for about 2 minutes.

Sorry Evelyn- kinda out of it tonight!

I'll paste what I have written on our website.

On a Wednesday in September, Tara came home from school and the gym and went to the kitchen to make dinner. Brett walks in with a big envelope and says 'Smokey got you a gift,' as he often says when he has something to give her (Smokey is his beloved and dearly departed dog who still has a presence in our lives! ha ha) . Brett had asked her a few weeks prior which Steelers jersey she would like - she had no preference. He chose Hines Ward, #86. She figured that this gift was the jersey and was right. She took the jersey out of the bag and thanked him, and went to try it on. But before she had it over her head, Brett said 'But wait! Look at it first- it's a special edition jersey!' He pointed to the Steelers patch with the three diamonds, which had another smaller patch taped over it. Underneath the little patch was the ring! Brett asked her to marry him and she accepted! Tara never would have expected it to happen this way and was thrilled!

Re: Post your engagement stories!

Okay okay. I'll send it before the hubby gets home...he doesn't understand LIW

I submitted my story for a contest so it's very detailed...

We never spoke about getting engaged/married, but I did tell him that if I was to ever get engaged, I would want to be completely surprised.

A few months later, Anthony went to work. He sold his Suzuki motorcycle and told me it was because he hardly had time to ride it. During the summer, we always had busy weekends, and he was working overtime during the week. What he was really doing was preparing my surprise proposal. After work (not overtime like I thought he was), he would go home, lay/tape a bedsheet on the kitchen floor, and paint in a stencil he ordered online. He also filled in a border around the bedsheet using a black ballpoint pen because he couldn't use paint.

Our birthdays are in May and June, and we wanted to plan something outdoors. Anthony asked me if I wanted to go to Central Park one day. I hadn't been there since I was a young girl, so of course I wanted to go to ride the merry-go-round. He also mentioned that there was a gondola ride in Central Park and asked if I wanted to go. Not knowing how to swim and remembering all the news stories about the park, I was a bit hesitant. So we made a deal that if he came on the merry-go-round, I'd go on the gondola ride.

Well, with the busy summer, we never made it. By the end of August, Anthony said he might have one Saturday in September off and asked if I still wanted to go to Central Park. I felt bad because (I thought) he was working so much over time so I said okay. A few days before going to CP, I went to his apartment to have dinner with him. He called me a told me he had to bring his mom to the store and was running late. What he actually did was left his apartment before I got there, drove to my house, presented the news to my parents that he wanted to marry me, and drove back.

We had been watching the weather all week because we didn't want it to be too hot or rainy. Up until the day before, the weatherman suddenly announced rain in the forecast. Poor DH couldn't sleep! I knew I would be walking alot and it was going to be warm so I didn't dress up. By Saturday, September 17, 2005, Anthony had everything set up. He made arrangements for the gondola ride, mapped out exactly where everything was in C Park, and made plans with his best friend.

We walked around Central Park, took pictures, rode the merry-go-round and made it to the Angel Fountain. Anthony said he had made a wish to the angel and it came true-that he met me. He felt he owed the angel so he returned with me, and I had to make a wish. When I looked in the fountain, there wasn't any change so I didn't know if I could throw it in. He said it was ok, and I did. At 2 oclock, we went to the gondola ride section. We got on the gondola and were off. The gondolier and Anthony knew what was going to happen. As the gondolier serenaded us, we sat and enjoyed the ride. Anthony was being romantic and telling me how happy he was that he met me. As the gondola turned to go back, Anthony mentioned the Angel Fountain. He said there's one more wish, pointed ahead, and said look. I saw two ducks floating by and said 'what?'

He laughed and pointed again, and his BF unleashed the bedsheet banner gleaming with the sun from the bridge/overpass that said 'Nicolina, I love you with all my heart!, Will you marry me?' I froze, said yes, looked down, and saw my ring. I grabbed DH and cried, the ugly cry. What I hadn't noticed in all this time was the crowd of people on the bridge cheering and screaming. I do remember someone screaming 'what did she say?' I didn't even know his BF and his family were on the bridge until I got off the ride. My hands were numb and I was in complete shock.

My family knew and had prepared a giant feast of food. We went to my house with his mom, ate, had cake and champagne.

What a ride!

YOU are too cute

New Years Eve-In HHI, SC.
We had plans to go out for New Years, but we also had DHs cousins engagement party that night. I hadnt felt good at work, so I had said I may not go anywhere...both of the girls I was working with insisted that I was going out. DH went and got a hair cut (which wasnt abnormal ) but this is how far he went. The lady that cut his hair, KNEW that he was going to ask me, the girls I worked with KNEW he was going to ask me.
Let me stop here and say that-I ALWAYS pick up on DH and ruin surprises.
So later that night we are getting ready and he said that our neighbors were coming (they never come out) so he ran down to let them know we were leaving soon, he comes back and tells me that they arent coming-duuuh was the first thought to run thru my head. So we leave and go to the party, now all night at the party everyone is constantly dragging DH away to talk to him about 'something'...his cousin came over to me and was like sooo do you think you guys will get engaged anytime soon. The answer was who knows.
We go to meet our friends at a bar/restaurant that a friend of ours band is playing at, she has a video camera, keeps walking around clutching her purse (she rarely carries a purse let alone cares about it) As the countdown started, I being a NYorker was excited about watching the ball drop-especially since I was in SC at the time, well DH starts pulling on my hand....SO being the annoyed NYorker that I am I turn around, freaked out and said 'WHAAAAAT' he was on one knee and the rest is history. I cried, stood up and DH told me to turn around, and the WHOLE PLACE was standing there smiling and clapping looking at us! It was perfect adn I never figured it out. I had NO CLUE and i should have.

We have it on video, no pics tho b/c one of the girls couldnt get my camera to work

And at this point, EVERYONE started calling...includign the lady that cut DHs hair

DH was sleeping over my house for the night so he was on the couch of course lol DH was sleeping over my house (not my own place...my moms too) for the night so he was on the couch of course lol.... he had come upstairs to lie with me for a little while, for some reason i could NOT fall asleep, and after a while of dozing and waking up, all of a sudden all the lights flick on. My initial reaction was 'What are u doing?! It's three am! Turn the lights off u're making me blind!' lol...ANYWAYS, Josh went on to say 'I have something to help u sleep'...so i figure, okay he's being sweet - let him be. He pulls out a card in a pink envelope...and it was all about getting married(mind you i still have no clue because i think he's just being sweet - he always did stuff like this). The card was filled with goofy promises like 'I promise to always leave to toilet seat down, as long as you promise not to use my razor to shave etc. etc.' and at the bottom in his own handwriting he wrote ' Out of all these things, I promise to make you & keep you happy for the rest of our lives'...(still have no clue) I say 'ooh you're so sweet, I love you' and go to give him a hug, only for him to respond with 'wait...that's not it...there's something else' at this point I noticed he was on one knee next to my bed - he then pulled out a georgous lenox keepsake ring box with my STUNNING ring it it :) and said the words 'will you marry me?' I WAS FLOORED. Completely & utterly shocked saying 'WHAT!??! It's 3am! Is that real? THAT IS A BIG DIAMOND!' etc. etc. etc....i know it sounds random..but it was SO PERFECT because i had absolutely NO CLUE. I think any other way i would've picked up on it....I was just so taken back and so suprised...& now of course REALLY couldn't sleep...I went on to wake up my mom, call my cousins & best friends at 3am and beamed with josh by my side...the next day we went all over sharing the news with friends and family without an ounce of sleep :) .... he had come upstairs to lie with me for a little while, for some reason i could NOT fall asleep, and after a while of dozing and waking up, all of a sudden all the lights flick on. WHEN WE GOT ENGAGED
December 16, 2005

HOW IT HAPPENED
Nate and I celebrated Christmas early, on the day of the 16th. We started our celebration with a romantic dinner at La Locandas, an Italian restaurant. It is a special place, being that the owner knows my grandparents from their roots in Italy. Our table was nestled in front of the fireplace, beside the Christmas tree. We had an amazing dinner and talked about our life together. Since this was our first Christmas together, it was an especially meaningful occasion for us. The mood had been set for a perfect night.
After dinner, we returned home to exchange our gifts. We were so excited! The gifts were laid out under the tree (adorned with beautiful butterfly ornaments), and we sat down to open presents. We alternated giving our gifts. I had noticed that each of his presents for me had a card attached with sequential numbering, which piqued my interest! As I opened each envelope with the gift, I read romantic passages on paper with burnt edges which Nate had written about our love and relationship- past, present, and future. It was hard to keep my eyes from welling up.

At first, the gifts were lighthearted or practical, and then became more meaningful and personal. The poetic letters were more and more touching with each gift! Sneaky Nate had given me gifts encased in small boxes that all could of potentially held a ring, so I began to suspect that something was going on. As I continued to open gifts, I was never disappointed in the least! The gifts were meaningful and so beautiful! Each one touched me in such a personal way. The second to last gift was a beautiful Tiffanys silver butterfly necklace which has a special meaning to me, as it represents the memory of my father. The last gift presented to me was a pair of beautiful diamond earrings. At this point, I was so excited and touched. I didn't think that it could get any better.
Once we had finished, I told Nate about one more gift for him that I had hidden. It was a silver promise ring with a portion of a biblical verse engraved on the inside. The full verse is: 'Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity'~Colossians 3:12-14. The ring said 'In perfect unity.' It was my promise of devotion to Nate.

After receiving his gift, he pulled from the bottom of the Christmas tree one last envelope with no gift. He told me that he would instead like to read the last one to me. He also told me that he had one last gift to give me. He left the room and returned with a large ornamental box, which he sat down next to me. At this point, I was thrown! I thought 'what could it be!'

As he opened the last envelope, I could see that he was becoming serious and emotional. So was I! He then read the last words of his letter (I had not known that each of the passages that I had already read were sections of a beautiful proposal letter). As the words came out, 'Jessica, to the world you are one person, but to me you are the world. Today I promise that I will love you always, and I get down on one knee to ask...,' I could tell that he was trying not to cry, but we were too overwhelmed with emotion. He got down on his knee and finished, 'Jessica Ann ___, will you marry me?' He opened up a box to reveal the most beautiful ring that I have ever seen. To which I replied, 'Yes, of course!' We both began to cry and held each other. I was in shock!

And the box that he had laid beside me held a message in a bottle- the letter in its entirety for us to have as a keepsake. Nate made this one of the most special moments of my life!
