Pregancy & Food...kind of work related question

Pregancy & Food...kind of work related question

This just happened at my job and I don't really know how to feel about it.

I work for a pretty large company...total about 1200 employees, probably about 100 on my floor. Anyway, we were just told that the people on my floor can no longer eat or pop popcorn since a woman is pregant and it makes her sick. But everyone else on other floors can obviously eat it.

How would you feel about this? I completely understand that feel sick to your stomach is not a good feeling, but I eat popcorn everyday along with like a dozen other people. I dunno...just putting it out there....maybe I need to hear the opinions of others.

as a former prego, i can understand that certain things make you sick, but i don't think its necessary to request that the entire floor of people cannot have popcorn. i never told anyone at my job they can't have certain foods.

either way, how prego is she? it might pass.

she's 7 months!

i just didn't know how to handle that, i thought it was kind of ubsurd.....like what if other things start making her sick, am i going to have a list of things i cannot eat? and don't get me wrong, i totally understand that when your pregant smells can make you sick.

I've never been pregnant, so I can't really relate or judge. BUT she sounds high-maintenance.

Um.. I've been pregnant.... and this is ridiculous.

I wouldn't ever make an entire floor not eat something because of me. she doesn't like it... she can take a walk.

and if I were you... I'd make sure to eat a crap load of popcorn right when she comes back from maternity. hahaa!!!

I can almost understand the actual popping being too much to smell but after it's been popped the smell isn't bad at all. Can't you pop it on a different floor and then eat it?

she defintiely is, she is really not a nice person in general....and she didn't even ask us politely, she just put up a sign.

i just wanted to make sure i wasn't being insenstive.

I don't think you're being insensitive at all. I would have issues with it.

I kind of think it's an HR issue. You can't allow each floor to do something except for one. You need to treat all employees equally. Her comfort isn't more or less important than anyone else's. Tell her to get some pregnancy pops.

ITA, I mean if she had gone about asking in a differnt way like maybe said 'Hey the smell of popcorn popping is making me really sick would you mind just givng me a warning when you're gonna do it so I can take a walk or use that time for a bathroom break it'd be great'. But putting up the sign is passive aggressive and rude. Did a supervisor or manager make this rule or did she just take it upon herself to put up a sign? If this wasn't mandated by a higher up I'd keep on popping!

YES - this is exactly what I was going to suggest. There has to be a middle ground! She is only one person - her own personal policy should in no way be observed by an entire floor!

Meet in the middle!

This is absurd! Who does this woman think she is? I can understand the smell of popcorn popping, but to go so far as to ask people not to eat it at all? does she has a werewolf sense of smell?

With 100 people on the floor do you have more than one break room...if so I can understand maybe asking people to not pop popcorn in one of the rooms so she can go in there and not feel sick...but I think it is kind of odd to ask 100 people not to do that...some people get sick at the smell of fish but you can't ask people not to eat it....hmmmmm????

As a preggo I think this is just too much. I could see asking ppl to pop it on another floor, but not that ppl can't eat it. What if you bought already popped pop corn, that barely has a smell. They can't ban that. Just seems like a little much to me. I would never expect anyone to do this for me. I rather smell that then when ppl warm up their nasty leftovers.

eta: She is wacko for putting up a sign! I use vicks baby rub under my nose if something bothers me. I keep it in my purse. It blocks anything that makes me feel sick. Buy her a jar of it.
