Anyone have success with doing them yourself??? the hubster was thinking of doing it this year - but i want to find something quick, easy & foolproof since he is a procrastinator! lol.(and of course something that isn't going to cost us an arm & a leg). My friend was telling me about TaxAct.com - anyone have experiences with it???? or have another reccomendation???? Tia!

Re: Preparing your taxes????
I have always done them myself. I usually use TurboTax. It's really easy - it takes you step by step and helps you understand everything. The best thing is that it's cheap - free in a lot of cases.
But this year, with 2diffrent state returns, a new house and new marriage we decided to go to a tax person.

Re: Preparing your taxes????
I used to do mine myself before I got married, and it was kind of a pain but not too bad because I could use the short form and didn't have too much to figure out. But now that I have to file with DH and we own a house, it's more complicated so I didn't want to risk messing it up if I did it myself. We used H&R block last year, and we'll probably use them again.

it definitely does. it's not an online program; it's a software that you can either buy or download it. DH just bought it I think at target it's cheapest. You need to get the deluxe which is federal+state.
I used to always use it before DH started doing my taxes. He's been using it for years; it is so easy and user friendly and you can go back and play with things (like rather now he's figuring out if we get more back filing jointly vs. separately). then you print the forms, e-file, etc. it walks you through the whole process. its great!

Re: Preparing your taxes????
How much is it, roughly, to hire a cpa to do your taxes? I am thinking of just having someone do it for me, but I need to see if i can budget it in...

Re: Preparing your taxes????
I went to H&R Block once a few years ago, and they charged me over $250. I was floored. We started going to a great guy in Seaford who charges a reduced rate your first year, and I think he just told us that since we are filing jointly this year, it's going to be about the same as we paid last year separately! Less than $150 for us and I think it's soooooo worth it.
Not sure if I can do this anymore ... but if anyone needs someone I can recommend him .... (finally, a legitimate, non-sarcastic use of the !!!)

Re: Preparing your taxes????
My DH does our taxes. He used to be an accountant, a real estate accountant so he's not too familiar with all the rules and regulations, he uses turbo tax and highly recommends it to everyone. I tell people I'm sleeping with my accountant
