Preserving my dress

Preserving my dress

My wedding was November 10th and the dress is still hanging in my closet. What have you done with your dresses? Have you had them cleaned?

I know I still have to preserve mine which is still hanging in my closet since Sept 15. I am going to use www.wedclean.com for $100.

Sonicstef is using them also and she sent out her dress already. She said she will let me know how it is when it comes in.

I'd like to know as well, my dress is still hanging from 10/13!

Re: Preserving my dress

my dress is being cleaned now. I took it to the cleaners my MIL is the seamstress at (the owners were at my wedding). It would have been $150 before any friendly discounts.

They're still working on it - 6 months later! But I like that they didn't send it out (and I really don't need it now anyway.)

Sonicstef -- did your dress make it back from wedclean? Were you happy with what they did?

Mine is hanging in my mom's closet too (from 10/26)..my dress is so delicate and detailed (the whole dress is hand embroidered with beaded and crystals-much pretty inperson than it sounds) I am afraid to send it away.

Someone highly recommended a palce in Astoria but I lost tha name..so if you are reading this can you re-post it? Thanks.

Re: Preserving my dress

The shop where I got my dress from has a service that they send wedding gowns to to be preserved and cleaned. They get shipped back to you via Fedex and come in a box with a window you can see through. Maybe this is wedclean? The service is in upstate NY somewhere. I forgot the name. I was happy with them.

OK. I just went an d checked. I used Wedding Gown Preservation Co in Edicott, NY. 1-800-305-3108. They did excellent work. They got the mud off my train and the blood off my strap (from my brother) Comes with a 20 year guarantee.

To the ladies that haven't had their gowns cleaned yet...don't wait too much longer. Perspiration stains can be the hardest to remove once the garmet is dry. It might not be noticeable yet, but it will start to yellow very soon.

Re: Preserving my dress

Ok..i finally have a review of wedclean:

I posted in more detail elsewhere but there was a problem in the whole mailing of the dress. In short, they didnt notify me that they had received the dress and I had trouble getting in touch with them when I tried to follow up because of the holidays. When I did reach them, they were very apologetic and reassured me that my dress was 100% ok.

I opened the box last night to check that it was all in tact and clean. My first comment is about the box - a really nice sturdy box with a window that has a cover to protect the dress from light. They also use a plastic body mold for the bodice of the dress which is nice because it keeps it shape.

The dress was not folded into the box very well IMO. Sort of just thrown into the box - not that its the most important thing but I think a little care could have been taken in how its going to look when I open it up.

I pulled it out of the box and saw that they had sewn the straps back as I had requested and had not charged me.

The inside hemline of my dress was pretty dirty since it had been dragged around the streets of New York City. They did a pretty good job of cleaning it... it doesnt look like new but I suspect that no cleaner could get that much dirt out of silk without destoying the intergrity of the fabric. THere were a few other minor stains that are also gone.

In general Im happy with the result but I have to say that when I saw it last night, I thought the sheen of the silk was a little bit duller than when I had mailed it to them. That could have been the light or maybe the chemicals they used arent specifically designed for silk or whatever. My dress has very intracate beading and embroidery on the bodice and that was not disturbed.

It was only $100 - comprable cleaners wanted $300-$400 to do the exact same thing so I know I got a pretty good deal.

Overall grade: B

Re: Preserving my dress

Stef, thanks for the through review.

Stef or Christine, did you add the additional shipping insurance to your orders?
Sonicstef Posted:

Re: Preserving my dress

I did add extra insurance. I insured it for half of what the dress cost me.

Stef .. ballpark ... can you give an idea of how much this cost w/shipping & ins. ?

Re: Preserving my dress

As some of you know already... I preserved my dress myself.
Posted about cleaning at the laundromat. Came out fantastic.
I know it's clean and I can do all the other stuff myself.
I know this isn't for everyone. Takes some nerve to put it in the wash, but that's what the professionals do anyway.
If anyone needs more details let me know.
