Preserving my dress

Original post by Novembergirl

My wedding was November 10th and the dress is still hanging in my closet. What have you done with your dresses? Have you had them cleaned?

I think it was $20 or $30 for $1500 insurance.

Re: Preserving my dress

my mother has been married for 28 years and we open the box to her dress when i got engaged and The dress was absolutely perfect. Not yellow at all.... Here is what she did:

1. put the dress in a box when she came home from her wedding day
2. put a old button down shirt over it

3. put a box lid on it a put it in the closet

No chemicals, no cleaning, no preserving nothing-

Still as beutifull as the day she wore it.

Thats my secret, im sharing with you

Im doing the same with my dress.

of course if you have stains that you want to remove thats another story.

I got married in Nov. as well. I brought it to my cleaners, who also specialize in preserving wedding dresses. It cost $250 and they told me it would be ready in the springtime...maybe march. I brought it in almost a month after the wedding.

I had my dress perserved at Towne Cleaners. My MIL is a seamstress there and the owners were at my wedding, so I figured they'd do a good job.

I have to disagree with Debbus - my dress was not just thrown in a washing machine. And I don't recommend that treatment for silk.

It took 6 months but its finally done. I haven't seen it yet but my MIL says it came out good (and she's picky). I stopped in when in NY for Christmas and Frank (one of the owners) was still working on the hemline. I was impressed that they didn't send it out somewhere.

Its not perfect - as Stef said, I don't think the bottom hem will ever look new again (I wore the dress twice and the salt from the beach and dirt from city streets did quite a job on the silk. I guess I couldn't expect perfection), but the beading is perfect and unless the train is down, its good as new.

I think they originally quoted my mom a price of $150-165 before any discount was given.
