problem with my dog

problem with my dog

She's a piece of work, this one!

Ever since I've been back to work, she's been peeing all over the damn floor - we clean the floor all nice and the next day she does it again. Sometimes she poops too, but rarely. NOW she has taken to eating the wooden blinds I have (came home 2-3 times with little wooden sticks all over the damn place) AND the window sills!!!!

She kinda freaks out every spring when we open the windows -- I am guessing she can hear the other dogs on the block more, or just hears cars / people / etc more than usual. So every May she kinda goes through this, but usually it's just a little pee here and there for a few weeks, and it's done. This time I think it's compounded by the fact that I am no longer home with her pretty much all day.

Today we blocked the entrance to the living room, which is where she's been peeing and eating wood. She has access to the bedroom, bathroom (she never goes in there though), hallway and kitchen, where her food / water is. I also only gave her a little water vs. a whole bowl - I figure if she doesn't have too much to drink, she won't be able to pee as much This has actually worked in the past.

Anything else I can do??? I am going to try to spend as much time with her as I can, but we are super busy this weekend - she will home alone most of the day tomorrow Has anyone given their dogs meds for separation anxiety?? Or the supplements you can buy at Petco, etc?? I don't want to do this but I may have to give her something to calm her down - I imagine she is FREAKING out when we are not there.

I feel terrible for her. I am mad at her when I come home to a mess, but I also know that it's not really her fault. She's a good girl, really.

Shea's been chewing on our couch cushions! I don't know why he's doing it. I just keep spraying them with the no bite stuff and so far it's working.

I think you should try crating her during the day when you're not home to help with the separation anxiety & of course help with the peeing & destruction..

Crate training is recommended by vets & trainers.. when I adopted my dog who was already an adult and hadn't been crate trained previously.. I googled crate training and there are a million pages to read about the benefits & the correct way to introduce the crate...

My dog was destroying everything & peeing before I started & now she sleeps all day in the crate and is happy & ready to play when I come home.

I have some of that - I didn't even think of using it. Thanks.

I guess I could try that -- she hasn't been in crate in forever though, and I am afraid she will bark all day, and then I'll have everyone in the area complaining. Thing is, she used to be home all day, from like 8:30 - 5:30, with no bathroom breaks and she never peed, ever. This ended about 2 years ago, when I switched jobs to a closer one, where I could come home every day for lunch. She got used to it I guess. Then, I was laid off, and she got even MORE used to me being home.

We put our pit bull on Reconcile. It is a prescription from the vet. He would shake and hid in the bath tub when we left. He used to be crated as a pup but when we tried reintroducing to the crate he would show his teeth to us because he didn't want to go in there.

The Reconcile helped calm him down but you have to use it with some sort of training. Our trainer said that you need to exercise their brains as well as their muscles to really tire them out.

Thanks. I have a pit too. Blocking her access to the living room when we are not home seems to be working - no issues fri or yesterday (we were both out all day). I read about reconcile online - I will remember that if it's still an issue. And I will remember to give her the kong more!

I think your dog is bored. Buddy use to do this too when we left the house, so I bought a hollow bone and put peanut butter in it and it would take him a while to lick through it. It would entertain him for a couple of hours.

There are also dog toys you can buy to entertain your dog like a puzzle ball, where your dog has to push the ball around and it would dispense a treat. I would try that and maybe it would help with the chewing.
