At what age do you think you will talk to your children about the birds and the bees? The guy on this morning was originally saying he'd talk to his daughter at age 14-15 and they were all like NO that is way too late!!!
I am thinking around 10 or so. I know some girls get their period when they are like 8! And wasn't there some news story about an 8-year-old who was pregnant?! I think 8 might be a bit young to have the chat, but 10 is a good age I think.
Discuss!

Re: Q of the D
we saw the girl/boy film strip when I was in 3rd grade & they sent home a note telling parents that we would be seeing it- my mom & dad talked to me about it before I saw it.
I think thats a good age, especially since I just saw that some 8 year old was preggo- so I definately want to have the talk before anything happens to my kids or their friends

I agree that 14-15 is too late, by that age unfortunately they've at least seen everything related to sex.
I guess it would depend on my child, if my child asks where do babies come from then I'd answer the question, I wouldn't skirt around the issue. I'd say no later than 12 years old.

Re: Q of the D
i would start from very early on. my mom sort of told me what sex was and how it worked when i was a kid
since she was so open about it, it never occured to me that it was taboo for me to be so well informed at a young age. when i got older it wasnt a big deal for me to come up and ask her questions or whatever. so i think being open with my kids is the best option
i think i would tell them honestly where a baby comes from when they first ask.
also when they start to discover their certain body parts and realize that they are private and stuff i'll explain that boys and girls are different and why they have those parts of the body.
i mean obviously i wont get graphic with it

No, no. I remember hearing about it a long time ago and they mentioned it on Z100 today also just in passing. Sorry! I didn't mean to imply it was today's news

14 or 15...way too late. I will start earlier then that.....exactly when I am not sure. My mom was always telling me tid bits from as long as I can remember so I will probaly do that. And kids ask like when I asked my mom what a pr!ck was in the 3rd grade

Re: Q of the D
14 or 15 maybe in the 1950's but kids today are talking boyfriend girlfriend nonsense in the 3rd grade. My mom had 'the talk' with me when I was in 3rd grade so I was 9. I remember just wanting to get out of there because I already knew what sex was (or had an idea) from conversations with friends. I think talking to them early rather than later is better. Obviously as they get older the more you should tell them but starting from an early age makes them more comfortable with communicating about it.

Re: Q of the D
Ummm 8 years old and preggo! WOW! That is the youngest I have ever heard....is it even possible to keep the baby at that age? like will the body reject it? is it physically possible for such a tiny body to carry a baby? I feel like your body is still developing so much at that age (even if you already started puberty- obviously b/c the girl is menstruating) but i can't imagine an 8 year old having breastmilk and breastfeeding - its like an 8 year old body isn't meant for that KWIM?.....wow that is so weird, i get easily creeped out by that stuff.....but anyway that doesn't have anything to do with the question!
i think 8 is a good age for some basics - some kids are curious even before that and they do start teaching you some stuff in school - i remember having hamsters that had babies while we were in school and we learned about stuff - then we watched some videos ....i think once 6th - 8th grade comes (i guess 10-13) i think the conversations should be more frequent and less scientific hahaha - i think the more you talk about it the less uncomfortable it gets.....that way once the kids are in high school you can talk with them on more of a parent/friend level as opposed to a parent/embarrasing level if that makes any sense....

yea, I am pretty sure that this was the girl in Brazil- and she had a medical abortion for all the reasons that you said. plus emotionally could you imagine an 8 year old? crazy

When I was in 5th grade my school has this after school movie that you and your mother signed up for and watched. The nurses where there to ans any ?'s They also did one for boys and their dads. My mom made me go and it was nothing she told me. My mom is a nurse she always used the nursing terms and she was real and told the truth. I would say 8-10 years of age.

Re: Q of the D
i think around 8 is a good age for very basic things. i was one of the very lucky girls to get her first period at 9, and started to get boobs at 8, so my parents had no choice but to talk to me early. i think there's an appropriate way to bring the subject up at an early age, and as the child gets older, this will help them not be afraid to ask questions, and to help explain things a little more maturely as they get older.

14-15 is too old to have the conversation. I think definitely the conversation should be had before middle school, like 8-9 years old.

Re: Q of the D
In NY State it is required by law that sex ed is covered in school. Parents have the option of opting their kids out, but then they are required for covering the material.
My mom always said she was open with me about stuff, but wouldn't force it on me. She said when I had questions was when I was ready to learn more. I mean when you're a small child and you ask where do babies come from, my mom explained it to me as it takes the mommy's egg and the daddy's seed. So all through childhood until I knew the truth I imagine scrambled eggs and sunflower seeds

Re: Q of the D
I think children start to ask about it around 7-8 and so at that point you should be prepared to do a very general talk, not overly scientific. I think at 10 it should be another indepth conversation being more specific.
I think its so important to have a very open and honest line of communication about it b/c I truly believe the more secure a child feels discussing this with their parents the more likely they are to make healthy, individual decisions.
For myself my mom sat me down at 9. But she was always an outlet to discuss stuff with. I started younger than most but I was always safe and careful and even though my mom wasn't thrilled that I started younger than she had hoped, she knew I was very careful.
