QOTD-6/20/03-Why did you take your husbands name or why didn't you, or why did you hypenate?

I took John's name because:

-I am so proud to carry his name

-I am still ME no matter what my name is

-I want our children & us to all have the same name

-I am very traditonal with things like this

-I like his name better than mine

-Hyphenating seemed like a lot for me to sign even though we both have/had short last names

-I have no professional reason to keep mine, maybe if I had a firm or practice, but I don't

I took Anthony's name for the exact same reasons Jenn...with the exception of liking it better.

I hypenated, because i felt sad that I was giving up my dads last name ,and wanted to keep it for sentimental purposes, but i also wanted franks last name so we could be the XXX family..

I am happy with my choice, although both last names have 8 letters and my first has 7 so its a pretty long name!

We've been married for 2 1/2 years and I still have not officially changed mine.
Truthfully, I'm kind of torn. All my life I couldn't wait to get rid of my very ethnic last name. Sounds horrible, I know. But now, its hard for me to give it up. Dh has a very English last name. I was thinking of hyphenating, but its just too much.
Oh well, at least my initials won't change!

edited to add that my last name has 11 letters and DH's has 8!

I will not change my name for a number of reasons:

1. I really like my name and it is who I have been for the past 30 years.

2. My Dad passed away and I am really proud of the name that he passed on to me.

3. My husband's name is very Italian and I am very Irish lol...

4. My students can barely spell my name as it is, I don't need them any more confused!

However, when we have children, I will be referred to as Mrs. XXXXX that way I don't confuse the teachers or my children!

We both plan to change our names

1.I would like both of us to have the same last name

2.I don't want to take his name or hyphenate due to length of name and the cumbersomness

3.I am keeping my name, and we both plan to go through a court process to change our name to something easier.

Still have not decided on the target last name!!!

our children would have the same name as all of us, tradition, but most importantly b/c he asked me too adn it was important to him!

I like the traditional aspect and love that we share the name married. However....all my life I had a difficult last name - no one could ever spell it or pronounce it. Until you've had a difficult last name (or first name I guess) you cant believe how rude people are about your name. Half the time, before I even got through spelling it, people would cut me off with a 'WHAT?!??!' and then I'd get the 'What is that?' (it's Armenian) 'How do you say it?' 'How?' 'spell it again' It was so annoying. My father was very proud of his name although I know it annoyed him too. Anyhow...if DH had a harder last name, forget it! I'd definitely have considered keeping it. But he (we) has a nice easy name. Yay!

I have legally changed my name, but professionally I use my maiden name (but still thinking of hyphenating it here). Here are my reasons:

I only recently changed my name because, although he did not say anything, DH really wanted me to change it.

I did not hyphenate because my last name be 16 letters, but I still may do this at work.

Personally, I like my maiden name and really am not to crazy about my married name. By my maiden name, I have the same name as an author; by my married name, I have the same name as a sitcom. Personally, I'd rather be known as an author!

Re: QOTD-6/20/03-Why did you take your husbands name or why didn't you, or why did you hypenate?

This was soooo hard for me! I really did not want to change my name at all. There were many reasons why: I really like mine (not very common), you can't figure out the nationality from the name, I didn't want to carry an Italian last name (being honest - not meant to offend - all my life no one ever believes me that I am not at all Italian. You would not believe how rude people get to me when I tell them I am not Italian - it has annoyed me my whole life! and now with this last name it is even harder. ), and a few other reasons I care not to post.

But at the same time I like us sharing one name, I don't want confusion with friends and family when they have to address us, I don't want our kids to be confused, etc. Finally, DH said it was very important to him - very traditional. It made him very happy that I did change it officially. He thanked me for it and even one day looked at me and said he knew how hard it must be - like it really hit him. So I did it!!!

(Though in the office I am still going by my maiden name with no intention on changing it. I had worked here for a long time and established my name here and don't want to change it!)

I feel the same was as Iloveweddings. I have a very Irish last name (Kelly) and my DH has a last name that sounds very Arabic (He's not, but he is middle eastern- Egyptian, Turkish, tunisia, Israli). I am love my maiden name, but took his name b/c I love him and want our kids to have the same name as us- also b/c we work in a school together. I did however take Kelly (maiden name) as my new middle name. Professionally I use my first, middle and last name whenever I sign something or write a report.

Re: QOTD-6/20/03-Why did you take your husbands name or why didn't you, or why did you hypenate?

I took my hubby last name and kept my maiden name as my middle name, even though I don’t use it. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was not something that was hard for me to do. I am one of 6 children and didn’t feel the burden to have to carry on my maiden name. I did work hard in my field to get where I am today, and have both a Bachelors and Masters degree, in addition to my professional license, in my maiden name. Obviously I can’t change the name on my diplomas, but it was easy to change the name on my professional license.

Plus, my husbands family owns a business with their name on it. It’s been around for more than 60 years and my husband is on the wings of taking it over, so I felt proud to have my last name attached to his business.

Hyphenating wasn’t an option for me because his last name is too long as it is!!

For all paper work, I hyphenated the names.

At work, I go by my maiden name only and socially I go by his only. I wasn't ready to give up my name but when we have kids, I want us all to have the same name and will only go by his.

I just love being Mr. & Mrs. and sharing the same name and the idea of our children sharing with us as one big family.

Someone once said to me that only weak women change their names nowadays I think this is so untrue, I know that my individuality doesnt end just because I change my name and I am secure enough to know that.

I am kind of annoyed changing my name professionally because there are alot of steps but it is just easier to me.

I think I will always miss my maiden name but I have brothers to carry it on unlike some people.

Good topic Jenn, I think there are great reasons either way posted here

I really wanted to take his name. I did consider hyphenating my name for professional reasons but there werer just too many Z's in my name then!! If felt like I was tripping over my own name!!

Re: QOTD-6/20/03-Why did you take your husbands name or why didn't you, or why did you hypenate?

Like I've mentioned before, I go by different names for different things.

I want us to be a 'family', and I feel that it makes us seem more united when we have the same last name, and when we have children, I don't want to confuse their teachers by using a different last name.
BUT, I had a hard time giving up my maiden name because it's a very unique Italian last name, and I identify well with it. I also wanted to hang onto my heritage. People always assume I am German or Irish, but I am proud to be Italian, and didn't want that part of me to slip away.

In the end, socially and professionally I am Jennifer Renee R., but legally I am Jennifer Renee C. R.

I hope that all made sense.

I haven't done anything but I am going to hyphenate. I am an attorney. Been practicing 5 years and I have a pretty high position in my office and a reputation in Kings County so I don't want people not knowing who I am just by my name.

My name is extremely non-ethnic and I don't want an ethnic name.

And finally, hypenating allows you to use either name. the only documents that have to have the entire name are you SS card and Drivers license. So you don't have to change credits cards, checking aco****s etc....
