QOTD-6/20/03-Why did you take your husbands name or why didn't you, or why did you hypenate?
Original post by jennbaby
I took John's name because:
-I am so proud to carry his name
-I am still ME no matter what my name is
-I want our children & us to all have the same name
-I am very traditonal with things like this
-I like his name better than mine
-Hyphenating seemed like a lot for me to sign even though we both have/had short last names
-I have no professional reason to keep mine, maybe if I had a firm or practice, but I don't

I didn't change because his is hard to spell and pronounce and mine is only 5 letters and easy to pronounce. Plus its who I am, a lot of people call me by my last name b/c its so easy to pronounce. He was totally cool with it - and jokes he should change to my last name. I honestly believe it made the adjustment to being married easier b/c I stayed who I was in name. People at work always ask what my married name is and when I tell them, they say I see why you kept yours. Maybe when we have kids I'll hypenate for their sake....

I'm going to change mine because it gives me more of a sense of unity and family to share the same name as my husband. I'm also proud to carry his name.
I did play with the idea of hyphenating, but my husband felt a little hurt by that idea. He's traditional in his views (so am I for the most part) and really hoped I would take his name totally. I might make my maiden name my middle name, but I'm not 100% sure of that yet. But I really like my middle name. Maybe I can have two middle names.... We'll see...

He really wanted me to have his name, for family reasons. I was proud to take it!

Re: QOTD-6/20/03-Why did you take your husbands name or why didn't you, or why did you hypenate?
For me there were many different reasons for doing what I did. While I did change to DH last name on the marriage certificate I have not changed my name on any legal documents. I was married before and after the divorce decided to go back to my maiden name. It took a long time for me to change everything back to my maiden name, because I had professional licenses in 16 different states that had to be changed as well as all the other regular stuff (driver's lic., ss, etc). If I changed my name on my driver's license I would have had to change all those professional licenses a second time. Also I like my maiden name and DH's last name does not go with my first name at all. His last name is only 3 letters but it is not common and people always make fun of it.
If we were going to have children I would have changed it. My kids are already adults and they don't care what name I have. DH doesn't care either. He says we know we are married and that is all that matters. Besides people refer to me as Mrs. XXX anyway and I answer to that too. I have credit cards in both names too. I anwer to pretty much anything!!

I hyphenated on my license, but I won't change it on any docs. WHen I went there they said I could legally use either name at my will or both. I was very happy with that. I do like being called Mrs. XXXXX. I will decide which I will use at the moment depending on the situation. Anyting that requires ID, of course I will have no choice but to use mine.
For all the bank accounts and anything financial, I am changing this to the full hypenated name tho'.
When the kids go to school, I will use his name only for anything that has to do w/their school.

I have not taken on my new name yet, only on my email addy at work. I told hubby until he officially changes his name on everything I will remain with my maiden name. PS Jen you never did call me to tell you the long last name strory
I wanted to hyphenate my maiden name with my new last name, but hubby's last name is already hyphenated (long story) I don't even think its possible to double hyphenate.
The men who act like they don't care that you take on their name, are lying, b/c when I sign anything or answer any question with my maiden name, Roger quickly jumps to correct me, hello you said you did not care one way or the other. I guess it does matter to him.
I love my maiden name and when and if the time comes that I do decide to change I am going to change my maiden name to my middle name. PS even tho I don't officially have his last name on paper, our children would still carry that name.

I took DH's name to follow tradition. It's as simple as that! I saw what my boss goes through to explain her last name (she kept her maiden, but when you don't know you assume her hubby's Mr. wife's maiden name! very confusing)
I like the idea of us having one common name to unite us - especially when we have children.

Re: QOTD-6/20/03-Why did you take your husbands name or why didn't you, or why did you hypenate?
I didn't change my last name for a few reasons. Biggest one being that I want to be Dr. Maiden Name when I graduate from medical school in honor of my parents and all they have done for me to help me get to this point. It just wouldn't feel right to me to be Dr. DH's name especially when he was raised by his mom and step-dad who don't even have that last name either. The other reasons include very little interest in tradition, not feeling that having the same last name as my DH makes us more of a family, not believing that children are confused when their parents have different last names, and just feeling like it is the right thing for me. Honestly, my DH feels a little bad about it I think, but he is used to my stubborness at this point!

Re: QOTD-6/20/03-Why did you take your husbands name or why didn't you, or why did you hypenate?
I had been practicing signing dh last name since I was 16!!! It was such an easy transition for me. I never made a mistake once since married. My maiden name acutally looks wierd at this point!! I had started signing Mrs. L. Olan (dh name is Leo) and my mother said that was a bit much lol. My mother actually can't shake my maiden name, she makes checks out to me in my maiden name and went to pick up a prescription for me, came home and said the dr. never called it in, she was asking for my maiden name all along and did not realize it.

I'm very traditional about that kind of stuff which is why I changed my name on everything after we got married. Plus, I'm not really a believer that my last name made me who I am, etc. For me it was my last name and I always knew it would change when I got married someday!

Re: QOTD-6/20/03-Why did you take your husbands name or why didn't you, or why did you hypenate?
I too, am a firm believer that my name does not make me who I am. A name is not an identity. That is where the expression, 'What's in a name?' comes from. JMO. My maiden name is just a surname that identified me as part of my father's family. But, my parents are divorced and my Mom remarried. I was never really close to my father's family and during our engagement, I ceased having any contact or relationship w/my biological father. So, I was more than happy to take my husband's name, and create our new family together, under one surname.

I changed my last name on the marriage certificate and that's it for now. I don't see what the big rush or big deal is- the only people that call me by my last name are the companies sending me bills... everyone who knows me already knows I'm married.. so who cares.
When we have children, they will have my married name of course- but I don't think it will confuse them if I don't ever want to change my last name.
We just don't see it like a big deal... it's sort of antiquated anyway.
