Oh my, where could I start!?! Actually I'm writing a book on my whole experience right now....
If I had to highlight some of the more annoying things it would be:
The competitiveness his mother/brother/sil shows. Everything is a **** competition. From our jobs, to our weddings, and now even the house. His parents bought a new condo and the mother 'just had' to paint it the exact same color as our house, put up the same exact mouldings, buy the same furniture and even the accessory pieces (Mikasa, etc.). They say that copying is the highest form of flattery but I don't think so! It's so typical of the mother. When we were dating (and up to about a year ago) if we did or went someplace special to us and he would unfortunately mention it to her, she would JUST have to have him take her there too, just the two of them. Many a special spot has been ruined this way. The day he bought my e-ring, as he was showing it to her, she grabbed it from him, took her wedding rings off and put mine on. She held it hostage for two hours before he demanded it back. I almost didn't want it after hearing that tale. Oh yeah, as we were doing our renovation from hell, dear brother comes over (the 1st time ever - never offered to help once) and gives our house the once over. Since he had nothing to brag about at his house, he points to my faucet in the kitchen sink and goes 'Ohhh, we bought a much nicer/expensive faucet!'. Uhhhhh, okay? Then he looks up and goes 'Oh! You bought the same ceiling fan as us, you must have copied!'. Let's see, I've never been in your house ever and wow, what a coincidence considering H/D sells maybe a small selection of ceiling fans! What's the chances!?! Everything is/was a competition. Jenn's ring was bigger than mine/cost more and they had to point that out. They moved to Suffolk and even though my ex-fiance was from Suffolk and I was looking at houses out there since I was 18, we were 'copying' them by moving to Suffolk two years later (even though we couldn't afford a house in Nassau!). The list goes on and on. I've always had Boston Terriers and Bob bought me one for my 30th (which we are now having a custody battle over). Don't you know MIL now wants, guess what, a BT! Why? Because her 'son' has one and she wants him to feel like he's home in her home. Psycho!!! This is not a breed that anyone would just go out and buy. Bizzaro!
My other peeve is the tossing around of the word 'family' to suit them. Whenever I was excluded from things/events throughout our relationship, they said it was because I was not 'family'. I heard that countless number of times, even after I was engaged/married to their son. But then when I would do something to p i s s them off, say not go to one of their gift giving occasions or something, I was not acting as a 'family' member, or what was 'I' doing to 'their family'. Makes me ill. I have alot of 'family' members that are not of blood relation and I know that the true meaning of family is not a term of convenience. It's a committment and appreciation of someone in your life. Like our LIW family

After awhile, I didn't care if I was 'family' to them or not. Why would I want to be a part of a bunch of freaks?
Oh yes, and finally...Gift giving!!! Holy cow! They will have a gift grab for whatever they can. St. Swiffen's Day, whatever. Never once will you receive an invite to their home just to hang out or to celebrate a holiday with a BBQ (Memorial Day, etc.). Oh no! Only birthdays, cristenings, anniversary parties, mother's day, father's day, All Saint's Day, you name it! And talk about doing only the minimum! We went there for his brother/sil's kid's birthday in Sept and she had generously put out for a guest list of 30 one single size bag of potato chips and a half eaten bag of pretzels she had lying around. Oh yeah and she went all out and popped the top on a can of dip. That was it! Nada, end of story. No food, no nothing! Not even soda was put out. The cake? An Entemann's special from the bakery thrift store. We are not talking poor people, ladies and gentlemen. They have all kinds of cash and don't mind bragging about it. However, the struggling slobs in Patchogue never let a guest go home hungry or make such a poor presentation. And we don't invite people to our home to get gifts. Tacky, tacky, tacky!!
Can you all tell I had too much sugar coated cereal this morning?
