Question about baby names

Soooooo~I didn't want to crash on the pregnancy board on LIF, so I'll ask you lovelies your opinions:
We are going to be TTC soon and of course I have been going over baby names in my head.
Would you veto a name that you LOVED because someone in DH's family had a child with a similar name? Just curious...

Re: Question about baby names

it it was a similar name, i would not veto it ... but if it was the same exact name, i probably would (unless it was a fairly common name)

Re: Question about baby names

I think it all depends! If the name is popular, I don't see why not. If it's a little more unique, I might ask the relative.

I was a little ridiculous and vetoed names for all sorts of reasons. I'm glad I did though because we wound up with a name we LOVE. We knew we'd have a name that began with an R after DH's mom. DH and I loved the name Rebecca, but his ex girlfriend's sister's named that. I know that sounds extreme, but if you knew how vile this ex was, you'd be vetoing any association from her too! We both loved Remi, but DH has a cousin named Remi. I never met the cousin, but DH said if I could veto a name for (what he considered) a dumb reason, he could veto a name because a family member had it. I got his point, haha.

Re: Question about baby names

my inlaws named a kid after both of them.

no seriously.

plus, my brother is a junior. and DH has an uncle with the same name.

i dont think we're going to have this problem but... if i really loved a name i wouldn't care but maybe see if a different name could grow on me.

although i dont think anyone else will be planning to name their kid 'moses' so... we're in the clear.

Re: Question about baby names

When I went to DH's family reunion a few years ago and met some of his TWENTY SEVEN first cousins, I was crushed to hear one of his cousins had boys named both Jack and Jonathan... two names I really like for a boy.

But when you have 27 first cousins, names are going to get used. It's kinda one of the reasons we announced our baby's name to the family realllllly quickly once we knew the gender. lol

But he really never sees these cousins so it wouldn't be much of a big deal to use the names again. If we saw them all the time, we'd probably not do it. Good thing we're having a girl right now so it's not something we have to worry about right now.

Also if they're really far apart in age, I don't think it matters much. But if they're going to be growing up together, I wouldn't.

If it's a girl- McKaela (pronounced mi-kay-la). And DH's nieces son is named Michael (pronounced mik-ay-el) It's pretty similar BUT we never see them, I've actually never even met the niece.

Edited-for pronunciation

Re: Question about baby names

I would be against a name that reminded me even remotely of any person I didn't like lol.

For example, I know quite a number of girls named Lauren who are btches...therefore I would never name my daughter Lauren, Laura, Laurie, etc. (No offense to anyone with ANY of those names...the Laurens I've known have just left a bad taste in my mouth- ugh!)

I have LOVED the name Brianna since I was 16. However, DH's sister's 9yo girl's name is Brianna. So that's out!!

totally not a big deal. there's tons of other beautiful names out there.

Re: Question about baby names

Me and DH have this problem! I love the name Delilah and he has a cousin with this name. Every time the name comes up...he always just says 'we can't name a baby that..it reminds me of my cousin'. Psh...they have only seen each other 3x in 10 years and its not even like she is a bad person or anything. He is so weird! I am gonna work on it though. All the girl names he likes are super lame.

Re: Question about baby names

Even if it was the same name if you love it don't let it bother you. Every other person in my family is Joseph, Nicholas, Anthony or Josephine. Unless the person is a jerk then I would find a new name
