Question about exercise

Question about exercise

I have put on a ton of weight since the wedding (as many of us have) and most of it is my tummy and my butt. I don't belong to a gym and really don't have the money to join one. Are there any exercises I can do at home that will work this off? DH and I don't have a treadmill or any gym equip at the house. Now that the nice weather is here, I do love to take walks and plan to ride my bike a lot but will that even make a dent in the weight in my 2 problem areas? I am so clueless about this stuff!! Thanks in advance!

Re: Question about exercise

You have to do cardio for sure. Running, biking would help. Also squats are great to lift the rear and tone it up.

Thanks, Lea! BTW, this is totally random but, how come I can't friend you on FB? The 'add to friends' isn't an option when I click your name but I KNOW you're not already my friend!

Re: Question about exercise

Go to http://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/workouts

They have a TON of exercises you can do at home and you can get free weights from Target or Wal-mart for pretty cheap. Definitely do squats for legs and butt. And when you're out walking on the weekends, visit garage sales too. People usually get rid of weights, steppers, maybe even those big ab crunch balls.

Re: Question about exercise

Definitely start jogging if you can or power walk. Cardio is definitely key. Also squats like Lea said and lunges.

Re: Question about exercise

I have a video by Denise Austin called '10 five minute target toners'. Its for your whole body but the lower body work out is great! I also started the Couch 2 5k. It's a great way to get into a running routine if you haven't run in a while. I'm on week four and its actually getting easier. The goal is to get you running a 5k (3 miles) in about 9 weeks.

I agree....if youre not up for running yet do fast walking--you have to get your heartrate up!

invest in some free weights (5-10lbs depending on your strength) and use them to do walking lunges and squats..as well as upperbody chest press, bicep curls.

pushups and situps are also the easiest workouts for doing at home!

LOL that's so weird! Ok, well I think I am on most of the girls' friend lists on here so I would search for Marisa Erickson on theirs and then add me from there!

Re: Question about exercise

Yeah the prob is also that I have asthma... so I am not sure how much running I'll be able to do without having an asthma attack! I will definitely try some of these suggestions though!!! Thank you, girls!

Re: Question about exercise

i LOVE doing mock jump rope. it'll work ur calves, arms & it's AWESOME cardio... stand straight, clench ur fists like ur holding a jumprope..do about thirty quick jumps (landing toes to heal).. while doing so move ur forearms in a circular motion like ur jumproping(try to hold ur arms in tight so ur only circleing from the elbows down)...rest, repeat as u'd like.
it's AWESOME..ur calves will kill tomorrow

for ur booty -
back leg pulses are great..u'll feel the burn the best part is that u can do them anywhere.. i'll do them in my living room during commercials while i'm watching tv, or even at work while i'm standing behind the registers on down time lol.. Stand straight...hands on hips, or u can hold a chair/wall to balance. While standing on one leg, extend the other straight behind u..pulse ur leg lifting it off the floor...10 w/ur toes pointed, 10 w/them flexed, switch legs and repeat
kinda looks like this, but u should be standing STRAIGHT...once u lean like that it totally takes away from the exercise...and u wanna pulse w/this

other butt-excercises that i like & that WORK..
kickbacks...again..pulse

and these are FANTASTIC...used to do them in dance...make sure u SQUUEEZE when ur body gets to the top.

hope these help! ..and i'm tellin' ya..for easy in-home cardio try to mock jumprope!

Re: Question about exercise

Thanks, Taryn!!! I used to be in dance as well but stopped when I went off to college. I am sure that fact hasn't helped w/ the weight gain, either!

Re: Question about exercise

I JUST went back to the gym, after a year break. I tried on a bathing suit last week and was scared of my thighs and realized something needs to be done about their massiveness. If I can't get to the gym I try running. I've never ran before in my life but I found an article that gave advice on how to get started. Walk at a medium speed for 5-6 minutes, then run for a minute. Do that 3 times the first week. The next week walk for 5-6 minutes and run for 2 minutes, keep increasing your running time as the weeks your running increases. Maybe we can start a support group for this too

Ugh I wish you girls lived by me! I was going to join a gym but I dont want to be stuck INSIDE for more hours than I already am. I have been fast walking but do not know how to run!

Re: Question about exercise

If you cant run due to asthma...then definitely walking. I would walk 30-40 minutes or longer if you can. Do this 3 times a week and maybe some a fitness video or tivo something off of FitTV!

Try and dediciate 1 hour a day to working out and stick with it - I think that is the hardest part - motivating.

YOU CAN DO IT!

Re: Question about exercise

My BFF goes walking on the Jones Beach boardwalk practically everyday after work, and on Sundays, too (in the nice weather, obviously). She walks a total of 4 miles. I have gone w/ her but when I go, we can only do 2 miles I am SO not in shape enough to do 4 miles without building up to it first!! Since there isn't really a beach out here by me (Centereach), she and I went walking in Blydenburg yesterday, which was very nice. The trails are also not flat, so today my calves are burning LOL!

yup, what I do is I HAVE to work out the second I get home. Last night I even laid out my workout clothes - so when I get home, I will be out of the house and walking within a few minutes

if i sit down or turn on the tv its all over! LOL
