So, I've somewhat gotten over my fear of taking classes at the gym. I've taken two total body conditioning classes and I've been able to keep up. In fact, it's very similar to the workout I did with my trainer pre-wedding.
I would like to do some cardio and have been thinking about Spin Class... I've only taken one ONCE many, many years ago and I thought it was so hard. But at that time I was not working out at ALL. I was coerced to go by a friend.
Question, should I try and take the spin class again?? What should I expect?

Sorry to crash...
The first time i took a spin class was in high school. I was miserable. I fell off the bike, felt like I had just been on a horse for an hour and couldn't walk for the rest of the day. I swore I would never go back.
I did go back and I loved it and have been teaching spin ever since! I strongly recommend a gel seat. It makes the ride SO much easier. Definitely bring water and a towel. Also, don't wear long pants. I prefer capri workout pants that way the pants dont get caught in the wheel but they dont ride up l ike shorts!
Spin is designed so that you can go at your own pace. Do what feelc omfortable for you and listen to your body. The first few classes aim to just make it through. T hen try to do some of the moves (ie, standing climbs and jumps) Once you get used to it you will love it. I guarantee it!!
Great advice! Thank you. I will definitely pack my capri pants! If I love the classes I will definitely invest in a gel seat!

Oh Also! Either wear sneakers that slip on, or tuck your laces into the sides of your sneaker. I once got my laces caught in the pedal and man did that hurt, It also snapped the laces right off.

Re: Question about Spin Classes
I used to take spin religiously - what a great workout. The first few classes are always hard but once your muscles adjust you are good to go. I suggest lots of water, a towel and tight fitting shorts or capris and wear a tank top!
Also when they say to crank up the resistance, just go easy for your first time. Like make sure your legs arent flying around really fast and that have at least a little resistance but you dont have to go crazy. Also keep your elbows soft, you shouldnt ever have your arms stiff. Oh when you are in 3rd position, make sure your butt is over the seat (I think its 3rd position, its not standing but crouching sort of), but push your butt back far as you can go for a great hiney work out! LOL! And lastly if you feel to exhausted to do everything just ride flat and take a break!
Also I always like to sit in the front, then I feel motivated to keep up! And then the teacher can correct you if you are doing something wrong.

Good to know! I will definitely tuck my laces in. That's something I would do except I would probably fall off the bike as well.

DH & I go to spin. Its VERY hard. Sometimes I have to go at my own pace.
I'd advise getting a seat cushion and getting cushioned bike shorts. I have both and my a$$ still hurts like helll.
Its def. a great workout
Once you take your 3rd or 4th class, your butt shouldn't hurt anymore.
I don't know WHY it is... but everyone that I know who takes spin says the same thing.
OP: Spin classes really depend on how good the instructor is... My mother has a GREAT spin class at the YMCA in Bellerose.. VERY ENTHUSIASTIC instructor. Only thing is, it is a BLOOD bath to get into that class.
I've had instructors that were very ...
Classes aren't hard, you can adjust them to your comfort level.

I am definitely going to remind myself to go at my own pace. I noticed that they play really good music and that the room is really dark during Spin. Crossing fingers that I'm A-OK tomorrow night! I'll give you ladies an update.

Re: Question about Spin Classes
Cindy you can totally do it. I'm a little sad because I'd do it with you totally. I love spin. You don't need a seat - your butt really does stop hurting once you get used to it. NYSC will give you a towel, just have water... oh and btw they make you reserve classes there 24 hrs in advance (not a policy I'm a fan of) so call tonight or first thing in the a.m. if it's for tomorrow.
I hope you like it; i'd love to have someone else to go with once I am done for the semester. You can seriously burn 600 calories in a 45 minute spin class. it's so worth it. and the music makes it fun.... just go at your own pace like others said.

Definitely!! We'll figure something out when you get back!
Try the Jamesport Manor Inn and we LOVED the Old Mill Inn, where we had our rehearsal dinner.
