Question about Spin Classes

Question about Spin Classes

Hey girls,

So, I've somewhat gotten over my fear of taking classes at the gym. I've taken two total body conditioning classes and I've been able to keep up. In fact, it's very similar to the workout I did with my trainer pre-wedding.

I would like to do some cardio and have been thinking about Spin Class... I've only taken one ONCE many, many years ago and I thought it was so hard. But at that time I was not working out at ALL. I was coerced to go by a friend.

Question, should I try and take the spin class again?? What should I expect?

DH & I go to spin. Its VERY hard. Sometimes I have to go at my own pace.

I'd advise getting a seat cushion and getting cushioned bike shorts. I have both and my a$$ still hurts like helll.

Its def. a great workout

I have never taken one bc I hate the bike, but I say try it! Why not?

Also, if you're looking for a good cardio class, you may want to try a cardio kickboxing class ifyour gym offers it. Those classes kick my @ss!

Yes, I'm definitely a little intimidated by it... Hmm, not sure if I should try it.

OR if I should try out a dance class. Though, I am TOTALLY uncoordinated.

You should at least try one class. The class I take is for 1 hour. Go at your own pace. The first time there is no way you can do what everyone else is doing.

I would definitely do spin again. I love spin. I havent done it in a while because everyone I did it with, didnt like it. But it is a GREAT workout. I actually got a friend to join the gym and we are going to a spin class on Thursday. I cant wait, I love spin. It is definitely a great workout. What I would say is that go at your own pace. Just because they say turn it up (meaning the resistance), dont kill yourself.

Bring a big watter bottle. Also bring a small rag/towel. You will be drenched

Like I just saw someone say, Bring a water bottle!! You'll need it! What the instructor had suggested was to put some gatorade in your water bottle for the electrolytes. I would also suggest bringing a dish towel or something similar, you will sweat a lot!

When I was going to the gym, the treadmills were next to the spinning class room. I would hear them yelling and screaming and having fun lol It looks so hard though. I knew a guy who did it, and he told me it was tough.

I would definitely ride on a regular bike for a few weeks before trying it only b/c I recently started to ride my bike again, and the next day my butt was soooooooo soreee lol you need to get your @$$ used to the seat. haha

I know. I just asked someone here @ the office about the 'behind' hurting from the seat. She says it does hurt... Before I invest in those special shorts, I will take a class and see how I like it.

I may get there early so I can get the instructor to help me out with the bike and figure out what height I should have it at....

I second this advice!! The first time I took Spin I went at everybody's pace, and that was a huge, huge, mistake!!! I seriously could not walk for 4 days. I needed a heating pad, hot showers, the whole deal. But I went back the following week & I love it. I have learned it's okay to go at your own pace. Sometimes it's a lot of fun depending on what music the instructor picks out!

Yes, that's definitely what I did the first time I ever did it YEARS ago and it's scared me off ever since.

This time around, I am definitely going at my own pace. I had a similar reaction to what you experienced the first time around

Re: Question about Spin Classes

Sorry to crash...

The first time i took a spin class was in high school. I was miserable. I fell off the bike, felt like I had just been on a horse for an hour and couldn't walk for the rest of the day. I swore I would never go back.

I did go back and I loved it and have been teaching spin ever since! I strongly recommend a gel seat. It makes the ride SO much easier. Definitely bring water and a towel. Also, don't wear long pants. I prefer capri workout pants that way the pants dont get caught in the wheel but they dont ride up l ike shorts!

Spin is designed so that you can go at your own pace. Do what feelc omfortable for you and listen to your body. The first few classes aim to just make it through. T hen try to do some of the moves (ie, standing climbs and jumps) Once you get used to it you will love it. I guarantee it!!
