Re: question for anyone who knows the LIRR

It depends on where you're going, when you're going, where you are coming from and whether it is a round trip! Can you provide us with that info?

You have to buy based on all of that info.

Worst case is that you buy a ticket on the train from the conductor. They charge you a couple of dollars extra for that.

Go to the station and buy a ticket from the machine. It will ask you where you are going and if you want a roundtrip ticket.

Once you are on the train the conductor will ask for your ticket. If you bought a roundtrip then he will give it back after he stamps it.

ETA: The ticket price depends on where you are going and where you got on from.

Just make sure that where you are going is on the same train line as where you got on from or else you are going to have to transfer in Jamaica.

DH works for the LIRR (so does my mom).

You're in Queens, right? What station are you getting on at - I'm assuming either Forest Hills or Kew Gardens. Buy the tickets at the station - if you buy it on the train you will get hit with a $5 penalty!

The price is determined by 'zone' so for example if you're going from NYC (Penn Station) to Amityville - you'd be going from Zone 1 to Zone 9. Obviously, the further out on the island the more expensive.

Give us your 'to' and 'from' points, and I can get you the exact price.

It's crazy to do that now - it's $5 each way! So for a roundtrip ticket, you'd get penalized $10.

purchase them at the machine at the station if you buy them on the train you get charged $5 extra! with the machine it asks what town you are going to and you type it in. also make sure you buy the right ticket if its during rush hour buy the peak if not you will have to pay the difference on the train

She is traveling on Sat so she doesn't have to worry about peak and off peak.

If the station is open....buy it from the ticket agent - that's why they keep closing stations because people use the machines instead of the agent. The general public gets scr*wed when we use the machines and they close the stations.

thanks!!!!!! do i have to transfer?

and it says something about sitting in the first four cars?so make sure i do that right?

Re: question for anyone who knows the LIRR

You have to sit in the first 4 cars on your way home - so when you get back to the Babylon station, walk all the way west on the platform. Don't worry, if you have any questions, ask the conductor - they'll help you out.

As far as transferring at Jamaica, it depends on what time train you're taking but MOST of the time, you don't have to transer in Jamaica to get from Forest Hills to Babylon. I think the only trains that do transfer are the really early morning ones.

For coming home though, you''ll probably have to transfer at Jamaica - again it depends on what time train you take.

I didn't see it at first either and included it in my post too and then I deleted it. But it's def something to know if you are traveling during the week.
