Question for Cat owners...

Question for Cat owners...

I recently bought a cheaper brand of kitty litter (clumping) and I noticed now her pee smells like AMMONIA so bad that I cant even smell it without it burning my nostrils. Is that bad? Do all cats urine smell like that or do you think I should bring her to the vet? When I use the Fresh Step I dont smell it as much but maybe its just masking it. Does anyone elses cats pee stink like ammonia that bad??

Yes, it's the litter. Cat pee normally smells like ammonia after it hits the litter box. The Fresh Step you were using most likely masked the odor better.

Yep its the litter. We used to use fresh step but we''re buying this Costco brand now. Its SOOOOO much cheaper and you get a lot more and surpisingly enough, the stuff works better. We bought it to try it then were amazed we couldnt smell the litter box even when laying on the love seat where we used to get that upwind draft sometimes.

If you have a Costco near you I can ask Pete to look at the name when he gets home and calll me with it. I won't be home tonight because heading into the city tonight overnight for sis-in-law's wedding.

He's stepping home first so he can look if you want me to ask him. It's finer than the traditional Fresh Step-more like the more expensive crystally Fresh Step. It clumps a heck of a lot better so all the grossness comnes out and nothing to linger and make it stink. We have cut down changing out the whole litter box to once every week and a half rather than sooner like before. We just scoop it every day and add fresh litter and it smells clean as a whistle.

LMAO its not the Kirkland brand believe it or not. Its an actual brand. It has like a purple pink label and some cat picture on the front.

Try it though. It really clumps so well. I am really anal bout the litter box because I hate anyone to get a whiff of litterbox and know we have cats. Always hated that about friends houses where they had cats and didnt take care of the litterbox. You'd never know we had cats other than from their furballs which is a futile war I tell ya.

have to love my Kirkland for other stuff though.

i think that brand is scoop away, white and brown kitty on it?? i tried to use it, but the kitty didnt' like it. she gets VERY upset whenever i change litter brands on her, so we can only use fresh step with her.

Yes Tina I think that's it! Awww yea if she hates it then it doesn't work. Our cats are both starys so i guess they take things as they go. The Scoop Away definetly works better for us. we liked the fine crystal fresh step but its so damn expensive and this works better for them with clumping.

Whew it makes me feel better that its normal for it to smell that way. I was worried she might have an infection or something. I wont be going cheaper anymore. But I would LOVE to know the Costco brand . Is it Scoop Away? I have one near me so it would be easy to get. Thanks girls.

It was some cheap brand in a container. I think I got it from Target and it was on sale for like 5 bucks. Some no name brand. My bathroom smells like I spilled gallons of ammonia on the floor

i <3 Fresh Step clumping with odor eliminating carbon. we have a small apt. and i never smell the cat poop/pee at all.

I didnt smell it either when I used that.

Advice, dont EVER skimp on kitty litter. You will smell the difference!

Thats the stuff we loved but honestly we found this stuff worked better-the scoop away. It clumps a little tighter. We have two cats and one eats and popps and pees liek a horse. When i used to lie on the couch I could sometimes catch whiffs but I don't with this stuff. If you hate it I am sure you can find someone to give it to but its sooo much cheaper.

i hate that whiff of ammonia. luckily since we only have one---its not bad. but i'm anal---i clean that bad boy everyday....so the fresh step clumps pretty great. we buy 'multiple cat' strength even though we only have one---and i find its more than enough for our little guy!

Forget the whiff of ammonia-its the whiff of cat @ss I can't deal with. SOOO gross lol. We were shocked this crap actually worked. We're like ahhh Costco stuff CHEAP. But its the same fine consistency as the fresh step so when Zoe takes her massive pee pee breaks its easy to clean out.

We have tried them all. We used the corn one and the feline pine to try and eb natural but it just didnt kill the smell.

the wheat litter with odorizer is the best!!! it smells great!!! HONESTLY!!! as long as you dont have dogs having a buffet in the litter box!!
