question for social workers or anyone in the mental health profession

i am starting a new job in july & am in need of books or activities i can use in group and individual therapy with mentally handicapped adults... i have worked with this population before, just never on a clinical level so i def want to buy some books and stuff so i can get ideas of group/individual work i can do with my clients.

i know amazon.com is a good site - i'm about to check it out now... but any other suggestions would be great!!

TIA

hmmmm. good qu. i've worked clinically (only through a practicum) w/ adolescents with MR. What type of clinical work will you be doing with them- therapy sessions? (If so, sessions obv need to be adapted to the individual's specific needs, shorter period of time, etc). I also worked with this population of individuals around sex education and boundaries. what kind of activities are you looking for- like geared around what subject?

i'll be doing individual and group therapy with MR adults... of course i know i'll have to adapt and alter different clinical tecniques, but i dont really have any specific books on the MR population.. i saved all my social work books, but i really wanted something more specific to the MR population.. especially some group exercises b/c i have only done group work at my internship and it was with adolecent MR

hmm hard to give specific suggestions for activities and so on w/o knowing their individual issues that should be addressed in therapy, what model youre looking to work from (i used adapted CBT), how verbal/nonverbal your group will be.

I did find this article for you- link

this looks like it would be a helpful article but you have to purchase it

this looks like a great book!

HTH! wish i had more experience to offer suggestions. im finishing my 3rd yr in a doctoral program in clinical psych and only have practicum experience thus far with ppl w/ MR. GL!
