Question of the day 11/25/02

Original post by NIHA

Hope no one minds if I ask the question of the day.

What is your/DH's ethnic background? Just thought we'd show the diversity here!!

I'm Asian-Indian and DH is Scottish/Irish.

Im 100% Italian. My parents are both off the boat from the boot, HAH.!
My mom is one of the inventors of the Italian-broken English words that have been created over the years, as all the off-the-boaters have tried to master (to no avail) the English language.
Its funny to hear, English words with an Italian accent, and Italian words made from English words. what a talent !! LOL.
'you lika thisa won ?' 'howsa yu mada ?'
and then the italian words spun off of OUR WORDS.
'sofa, storo (store), La chicken' cant think of any more right now, but theres TONS. im so used to hearing them that it doesnt phase me......lol.

John's background is Armenian on dads side, and Russian on moms side, yet if you ask him he is proudly '100% American'...he hates the discussion of everyones background because he quickly says we are AMERICAN (period!) and should be PROUD !! (well we ARE, John ! Gosh, make us feel bad !)

Anna, your post had me rolling on the floor, because I have some very dear relatives who speak your mom's language!

My friend's mom is off the boat from Poland, and she has the cutest accent and 'Polish-ized' English. When my friend doesn't call her every day her mom says 'Wassa da madda? You diworcing me?' I get such a kick out of that one... she's so cute!

Elizabeth and Bridetobe -- wow -- can't believe we've got some Lithuanian on this board. You can definitely tell there is a big Italian and Irish influence on LI and in NY -- I was feeling left out!

Well you are all right most of us are Americans but as much as I love being American I also love to celebrate my heritage. I don't know much about my Lithuanian side but I was laughing so hard on the broken English discussion. My grandfather (Ukranian) still speaks broken English and it so funny. He speaks part English, part Ukranian and part German. I don't even notice anymore since I've been so used to it growing up but when I really stop to listen it makes me smile. He's been here since the early 50's but still does not read or write English that well. Anyway -- I guess on one side I am first generation American b/c my mom and grandparents came to America from Germany in the early 50's.
