How are household chores divided in your home??

I cook, know what's in the fridge, cabinets, etc.

We both do grocery shopping, but he will often pick up things during the week when needed

We both vacuum

I usually dust, cause it bothers me more.

DH takes out recyling

We both do laundry

Share bathroom, but my standards are higher than his, so I do it more!

Share dishes.

I guess who gets to it first, is how we divide the chores.
We both do the laundry, clean the rooms (include bathroom), vaccum, dishes, we both cook (although I think he does it more since I have school) and usually I grocery shop, although he'll go to the store if we need something!
My DH helps me out so much ... he's a blessing!

Since I havent been working, I've done alot more.
Before we'd both do everything, whoever got to it first. I've been doing the cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc... He's takes out the garbage, does all the outside work (pool, yard), and will help out when asked. He loves to cook and cooks really good, but lately i'm here to cook and have it ready by the time he walks in !

I'm sure with the arrival of the baby, he will do alot more WITHOUT being asked !

Re: Question of the Day for 10/7/2002

I posted on the NWR board about how housework is too much to handle...I'm thinking maybe if I list what my DH does I'll feel like he's helping

He does:
Recycling
Loads dishwasher after meals
cooks breakfast
vacuums

not much huh?! I guess better than nothing LOL

We do together:
grocery shopping
clean car

I do:
Laundry
Cook dinner
all cleaning in the house
The finances, bills etc....

Here's a question:
Who is in charge of the finances?!! Who makes sure the bills are paid?

Husband ... and some, me - but once we are fully intergrated ... it'll be mostly him! He's a financial planner - he lives for this stuff. Thank God, cause I hate it!

Re: Question of the Day for 10/7/2002

Let's see, I'm one of those 'lucky' ones whose husbands helps out -- now depending on what he's helping out with, is how lucky I'll tell you I am!!!! There are more times I wish he wasn't so 'helpful', but I should be quiet!! LOL :)

Joe does the floors in the kitchen, diningroom and livingroom and he'll dust the entertainment center, since it has all his 'toys' in it and I'm not allowed to touch it!! (the nerve). I dust the other half of it with my 'toys' (i.e. crystal).

As for the laundry (he has no clue how to do that since his grandmother & mother always did it for him and I really don't want him learning now), cleaning the bathroom, bedroom, livingroom, diningroom and the rest of the house (what house, it's an apartment in a 2 family house, how many rooms do I think I have?? it feels endless when I'm in a cleaning frenzy I tell ya), that's all ME!! Most of the time I bring out the garbage and recycle -- he does too, but me mostly.

As for cooking, I live with Mr. Martha Stewart, so he's always hovering over the stove and helping (or taking over). In all fairness though, he does get home 2-3 hours before me and if he's really starving, he'll start cooking!

Shopping, we usually do together and I have the neatest shopping cart in the store! I swear, he packs things really nice in there, I've never seen it done before!!! (I'm LMAO over here, he's so darn cute and he's all mine!!! )

Decorating for the holidays -- his domain is the windows (which he also cleans -- I'm not allowed to touch them either because everytime I do, I take it out of the track ) but we do the rest together!!

I'm lucky that he's not lazy and expects me to do everything. He really does help out a lot, but there are times I really don't need/want him too, but I'm glad that he does! Don't look a gift horse in the mouth (or whatever that expression is)!!!

Debbie you crack me up !

My DH also gets all into packing the grocery cart. and when we are unloading it at the register, i cant touch anything because I mess up the routine/order! LOL.

So refresh my memory how long have you been in Astoria ? Just wondering because I can recommend some great places to eat ! Oh, my parents are moving out of Astoria next month (after 32 years of living there, literally 'off the boat') Theyre moving to Middle Village to be closer to my sis (the rest of us are on LI and Queens-walkable life - is a must for them!)

Debbie, you are too funny, I think like that sometimes about hubby, but I don't want to say you do not do it like I do, then he may never do it again, so I compliment him to death and then wipe or do over whatever he misses, when he is not looking. He has caught me on a few occasions and I think I hurt his feelings

I too, am one of the lucky ones who's husbands pitch in A LOT!
We share all chores and responsibilities on a 'who's least busy' schedule,
EXCEPT...
Yard work ~ him
laundry ~ me (he's willing, but I like my clothes to come out looking better than before they were washed, not worse! )
ironing ~ him (he's awesome at it!)
bathrooms ~ me (I skeeve everything, so I want to make sure everything is properly disinfected!)
mopping ~ him (he loves to do it, so why not?! )

Re: Question of the Day for 10/7/2002

Hubby was spoiled rotten when he lived in the downstairs apt. at granny's house. God forbid any good Italian woman would expect the man of the house to do any work that was 'woman's' work - and this coming from a woman who had a job outside the house every day.

Fortunately, he doesn't have that attitude himself, just the inability that comes with never having learned!

I do all the cooking, and could fill 2 pages with stories about his attempts to cook - scary.... Luckily I like to cook and I'm good at it. He does tell me that we can always eat out any time I don't feel like cooking, or get carry-out. And he's happy with grilled cheese and soup, or something fancy, and he always shows his appreciation.

I do the laundry and ironing - though he'll help fold laundry if I ask, and he's excellent about getting things to the hamper and not leaving them laying around.

He does empty wastebaskets and takes out the trash & recycling. He'll also occasionally run the vacuum or Swiffer the floors. He also helps change the sheets on the bed. He works from a home office, so he'll clean up the coffee pot and breakfast dishes, and put away any dinner dishes that were left drying on the drain board.

He handles all the car repairs (Thank God - I hate dealing with that!)

He'll go to Costco, grocery shopping, Home Depot, etc. to run errands, although I often just stop for groceries on the way home from work - it's only a 10 minute commute.

We do the yardwork together, although growing up in Queens and Brooklyn has left him a real novice at this - I have to teach him a lot about yardwork and he's afraid to pull any weeds for fear it's a flower or something I want. Since he didn't really want a fussy yard, I figure it's my obligation since it's my 'must have' anyway.

Same with the renovations - painting, replacing molding, etc. I've done a lot of it, and it's mostly new to him. Again, he'd just slop on all white and leave it at that, I'm the one that's pulling the molding off and replacing it with fancy stuff, so I'm not about to nag him to do it. He is helping though...

General cleaning is mostly me - he doesn't notice what needs to be cleaned, although he'll make an attempt if I ask for help.

I'm lucky that he's relatively neat - I'm the clutter-bug. His biggest dream is to be making enough for me to be staying at home full time - let's hope that works someday! It sure would make it easier.

Richie does the yard work, although I pitch in with planting. He changes the oil and deals with the car stuff. He does the post office and banking ( I hate those places) but I pay the bills.

Household is mostly on a 'who's available basis' and with gentle suggestions, he does well. I sort the laundry and put it in, he puts it in the dryer and folds it and brings it upstairs, then I put it away. I think that is a pretty even split!

He is a good cook, espcially Italian foods, so I defer to him on those things. I cook other things well, and I bake when needed.

Garbage is still yet to be worked out...seems I do that more, but he is getting MUCH better :-)

We do all the errands except the post office and bank together, even if that means 10 stops on Saturday.

I am another lucky one! My husband does just about everything.

I do the dusting and some vacuuming.
He does the cooking, laundry, bathrooms, kitchen, trash, takes care of the dog stuff and all other cleaning and he also does our finances!
But I work about 20 more hours per week than he does!
