Hi ladies! This is actually my first post on the newlyweds board (even though I have been married for 7+ months!) - because of work I have never been able to be a frequent poster, but I am hoping you ladies can help me with a random question.
For any of you that had your old SS card when you went to apply for your new one, did they keep it or did you get to keep it?
I am going through some of my important documents and I can't locate my old card or my passport -- so I am guessing they are together since I am pretty sure I brought them both with me that day - months ago now.
However then I thought maybe they kept my SS card and I am officially going crazy trying to find my passport (which I actually need).
Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the boards! I think I remember them keeping my ss card. I would keep looking for your passport though.

I am - I keep picturing an envelope that has them both in it but I am wondering if that was on the way TO social security only....
I really don't care about the card - I need the passport soon though! It just helps to verify (or not!) that I am not imagining this envelope that I think they are both in...

Re: Really random question about Social Security
I just changed my name at SS last month. I have both the new and the old one in my safe so I'm pretty sure they didn't take your old card.

Thanks... then I am probably remembering correctly... just have to remember what I did with my passport and my old card when I got HOME from social security and I will be all set...
It's been three hours of searching so far though, and I am starting to get nervous.

You shouldn't need your old card. If you show them a copy of your new SS card along with your marriage certificate (with your maiden name) it will work.

They definitely took my card when I went to SS. I remember it clearly because I was amazed that I'd kept track of it since I was a kid, but now it was gone because they took it.

Re: Really random question about Social Security
Thanks ladies - I found it!!
I tore my apartment apart until I was able to trace back exactly what I did the day I went to SS (the last time I saw my passport) and late last night I finally found it!
I have a current passport - the issue was that I have to book travel and if I lost it, I would need to get a new one in my new name and therefore book travel under that name, but if I found it I just book travel in my maiden name...
But thankfully I found it late last night after several frustrating hours of searching!! --oh, and I found the passport and the directions I had printed for the SS office - no sign of my old SS card!
