I am thinking Farmingdale may be too far from the water.

Any thoughts on Freeport?

We want good schools, not too far from train, and no more than 10 minutes from the water on south shore.

Thanks ladies. I have been doing searches all night on Prudential based on the towns you have recommended.

DH thought Farmingdale was too far from the water but in less than 10 mins we can be at the boat ramp in lindenhurst.

I'd stay away from Freeport if you want good schools. There are some nice areas but they go to freeport schools and I wouldnt recommend them.

I'm in Bellmore, its 45 mins. Merrick, RVC, Wantagh, Seaford and Massapequa are all great too...

Babylon would be way too far for me.

If your going by train it actually takes longer to get to NYC from Massapequa or Merrick then Babylon, FYI! Because Babylon has non-stop trains. Just so you know.
