Relocation Help

Relocation Help

Hi ladies...

DH found a job in Manhattan. We live in Stamford, as he had been working in Hartford, and I switched to a job on LI.

We want to relocate to LI, but need some help with towns to consider.

I grew up in Bellport/Brookhaven and love that town, but it's too far from the city for him to commute everyday. My office is in Bethpage, but I am generally all over Nassau and Suffolk visiting various facilities the company operates. So closer to Bethpage is good, but not a requirement.

We want to limit the search to south shore, west of Bellport.

Any recommendations for towns that have a similar feel, but are closer to the city? With good schools, not too far from water, etc.?

Or thoughts of towns to avoid?

TIA!

Re: Relocation Help

I would say live in Nassau for the sake of his commute. Lynbrook, Rockville Center is nice and he wont have to travel too long.
I do remember when my cousin lived in Long Beach the commute for her was 90 minutes and she wasnt happy with that but, my uncle travels from Hicksville, lives in Plainview, and is fine with his long commute.

So I guess it depends if your husband minds a long commute or not.

I lived in Farmingdale for a short while and really loved it there! DH commuted to Jericho from there and it took him about 10-15 mins... It has some really cute areas... Houses around where we were were going for high 3's - 450... taxes expect around 8-10k

ETA: You may also like Lindenhurst... very cute town, right on the water... but there are of course some areas to avoid there (like pretty much every other town)

ETA: try west babylon as well

I would consider Babylon because there are a lot of non-stop trains from there so its actually quicker to the city then many towns West of it.

Plus its a nice town with a good school district.

I student taught at West Babylon and thats not to bad, but Babylon is nicer.

I grew up in Long Beach/Lido Beach my commute from there was 50 min into teh city & then since i worked down town it was another 20 min by subway. I did it for 11yrs. Its a little painful but its not so bad depending upon where in manhattan he is.

I would say look in Rockville Centre. Make sure its RVC schools near the Golf course is nice.

Oceanside is fantastic. Great school district Most areas are really nice & good amount of property. LIRR isnt bad.

Lynbrook also good schools. Good commute time as well.

Island Park Barnum Island or Harbour Isle sections only. Nice close to beach low taxes. they go to Long Beach HS but elementary & Middle IP has their own schools.

Thank you so much, some of these we had thought about, but not for the others. I really appreciate it.

We are interested in Long Beach, but it's definitely still a long commute for both of us.

The train from Long Beach is 50 minutes max! I used to live in Island Park.

To the OP, South Shore Nassau sounds like your best bet. Massapequa is nice, Wantagh and Bellmore as well as what the above poster suggested. GL!

I'm in Bellmore, its 45 mins. Merrick, RVC, Wantagh, Seaford and Massapequa are all great too...

Babylon would be way too far for me.

We bought in Farmingdale and the commute during rush hours is about 45-50 mins. Usually we are the last stop before jamaica so it goes pretty quick.

We got our house for the very low 300's but we did a bunch of work to it ourselves. So far we love the area....neighbors are super nice.

We used to live in Lindenhurst. Train ride close to an hour and even though we were going to buy there I dont think it would be my first choice to buy now that I see what I can get in other towns.

We just moved to Massapequa and I love it here so far... and depending on where in Massapequa you are you're super close to Bethpage.

I am thinking Farmingdale may be too far from the water.

Any thoughts on Freeport?

We want good schools, not too far from train, and no more than 10 minutes from the water on south shore.

Thanks ladies. I have been doing searches all night on Prudential based on the towns you have recommended.

Also, for ladies who have bought or are looking, any recommendations on websites or realtors?

If your going by train it actually takes longer to get to NYC from Massapequa or Merrick then Babylon, FYI! Because Babylon has non-stop trains. Just so you know.

There are areas of Freeport that are beautiful…. but (not to start drama) it doesn’t have the best school district.

Well I am Suffolk so my recommendation won't help unless you are looking in Suffolk. But I used Netter, they are usually more high end, but they have diversified a lot lately. But I mainly used it so I could work with Kristine Rudner. She was wonderful to go out with. She was fun and friendly and I never felt pressured to buy. I tried several other realitors first and couldn't stand how pushy they were, she was the best to work with.
