Repost from BHB: Name changing

Should I go to the DMV or Social Security first?

Or does it not matter?

I went to DMV first and I still haven't gone to Social Security yet...I am planning on going next week!

Actually you can now do both of those online I think.
I went to the DMV only because I wanted a new pic. it was ten years old. I eventually went to the SS office to get my new card which is only mailed like six weeks later!
Just double check I am pretty sure you can to the DMV online and probably the other too.

I went to Social Security first and actually got my new SS card 6 days later, i am still waiting to get my new license. i dont think it matters which you go to first though

It doesn't matter which one you go to first but you either have to go to SS office or mail in application to get a new card. You can't do it online.

that is not the case, unfortunately. you need to show both the DMV and SS your marriage certificate in order to change your name. in addition, when you change your name on your license, you have to take a new picture.

We changed our bank accounts this morning so we were able to deposit all those checks!!

Its the first thing I've changed and all they needed was a copy of the marriage license.

Ill do everything else after we get back from the honeymoon!

Maybe it's different in NJ, but I had to go to SS first. When I went to DMV they made me show them the receipt from SS.

I only had to show my marriage certificate at the CT DMV. Your name isn't legally changed until you change it with SS so I'd probably do that first. It doesn't really matter though.
