researching areas to move to?

researching areas to move to?

We're thinking of moving within the next couple of years, possibly out of state (not sure about that yet - scary moving so far away lol), or to Long Island (if that's even at all possible with the prices of houses in NY lol)....

I'd like to start researching great neighborhoods to move to, but I don't know where to start...

Where do you girls get such great research on neighborhoods and areas in Long Island and out of state? You all are so helpful with details when people post questions about certain areas.... Are there any good websites?

Thanks!

I find the best reasearch is done in person. Whenever we travel somewhere we always stop in and look at model homes, etc....its the best way to learn. Online is helpful too.

Here is my 2 cents:

NC is VERY CHEAP and so many new neighborhoods and nice new shopping areas popping up all over.

Delaware - not too far, very reasonable price wise, LOW LOW LOW property tax, no state tax on clothes, etc, close to beach. Only downfall is jobs are hard to come by unless you are in Wilmington (yuck) or Dover.

Thanks for the info, this is exactly what I mean, the little details on a city.... I wish we could travel more lol that's not possible right now though.. so I was hoping there were websites with some insite!

I have found crime statistics and stuff by googling.

You can even google 'moving to charlotte' and a bunch of stuff comes up and blogs, etc.

DH and I have also been considering moving off LI, and it is really scary to think about, especially since we don't know anything about any other areas. But DH showed me how to look up info on just about any town on wikipedia. Usually you will be able to find out a lot about the population, crime rates, average income, etc. Other than that we still feel completely clueless because we haven't narrowed down our options to any particular state yet, let alone choose a town or city we like. Good luck with your search!

I really feel so bad that so many of you are being laid off or contemplating moving from the place you all love, N.Y. but I must say the cost of living there is outrageous. here in Pa. where I live the cost of living is nothing compared to what N.Y is, dh and I have very good jobs, lots of luxeries and building a new home in this sad economy. what were spending on building a new home plus the land we bought if we were where you all are we could make a killing if we sold, we would make alot here but a killing in N.Y. I could never move from here I love the country here and all our beautiful mountains, I could not imagine life out side here. I wish all you girls the best of luck, I pray you keep your jobs and for those who lost theres I pray you find something, this economy is hard for each and everyone of us, I know dh worries. but lets all pray things start to look up in 2009.

wikipedia and zipskinny are great ideas (i didn't know about zipskinny, thanks bensgirl!). I also am planning to move and do a lot of reseach on yahoo yellow pages. Once you find an area through wikipedia or zipskinny that looks nice, put the zip into yahoo yellow pages and check out where the grocery stores are, where the walmart is, etc. If you are not sure if the area is populated or not, this will help you see how far the things you need are -- and thus lets you know how populated the town is. It's helped me cross some towns off my list and also add some that I thought were too far from the basics.
