Riviera Maya

We are trying to plan a trip to Riviera Maya in March with another couple/friends. Suggestions on where to stay? We are strongly considering El Dorado Royale -has anyone been? Good/bad experiences. Thanks!!!

Hi, we just came back from our HM there. We stayed at Excellence, which was great. However if you love NYC and have stayed before in the city, I would suggest a hipper spot. Riviera Maya is beautiful, even the beach, which usually gets a bad wrap. But I have to say the coffee is horrible and I am so used to good NY food that it was just ok for me. I've stayed in 5 star hotels in Manhattan before and 5 star in Mexico is not equivalent to each other. I know Le Blanc in Cancun is supposed to be very posh. I guess it depends what your looking for, I will say the Spa at Excellence was awesome.

We also stayed at Excellence recently and were pretty impressed. I think its hard to go to a different country and even more so an all-inclusive resort and expect the sort of food you would get in NY when dropping $200 a meal. The worst of the food would still be on par with a chain restaurant and some of the better dishes would rival any NY hotspot.

You are close enough to cancun to go out at night, but you can just as easily stay at the resort and chill out.

its funny you mention the coffee... i'm a big fan and while it wasnt ridiculously good, the espresso was fantastic

We went on our honeymoon there last month and stayed at the Royal. We absolutely loved it! We did all inclusive-- the food was great and the rooms, service, everything was awesome. It was such a convenient location and so close to 5th st. (downtown area). You are also very close to the ferry depot to go to Cozumel, which we did. FM if you want more details.

Stayed at Excellence in cancun and was FABULOUS but I will say the one in DR was better-not hotel wise, but service and foodwise.

If we go back to mexico we plan to stay at LeBlanc-supoosed to be fabulous.

We got back from the El Dorado Royale a few weeks ago for our honeymoon and we truly LOVED it! The food was delicious...drinks were awesome...especially at the martini bar! We stayed in the Casita Swim Up which was just unbelievable! The room was beautiful and spotless...service was wonderful and everyone was sooo nice! We took a free shuttle to Playa Del Carmen and Cancun which saved us money! We also did a tour of Chichinitza (Mayan Ruins) and swam with Dolphins which was all relatively close! Truthfully....we would go back in a heartbeat! When I get my pics on the computer I will post them...feel free to FM me for any q's! Good luck! :o)

My daughter just got back from her honeymoon. They stayed at the Excellence and loved it. Aside from the fact that she got sick (Montezumas revenge), they had a great time. They said the food was very good. Good luck.
