Anyone have one? Our accountant was shocked that we didnt and recommended it- but wanted to see if we really need it or even what banks have them

Re: Safety Deposit Box
he said marriage license, title to our cars, our mortgage papers/coop agreements
and a copy of a will- he said to keep the original at home cause if one of us dies they seal the safety deposit box and you need an original will in order to get in
just seems like too much trouble to me

Re: Safety Deposit Box
We keep all our important papers in a fireproof strong box in our home. It's in my linen closet under my sewing machine. You can get a safety deposit box at any bank. Price depends upon the size.

Re: Safety Deposit Box
alout of local banks have them, if you have a fire proof safe at home then i would think you are ok, if not then i would get a safe deposit box, you can get a small one for less then $30.00 a year

Re: Safety Deposit Box
We have a fire proof box in our home that has everything important, birth certificates, marriage license our passports...the usual. Banks charge you a fee a think to open a safety deposit box. I know a lot of North Fork (capital one) banks have them.

Re: Safety Deposit Box
on the fireproof boxes- I have heard that they are only fireproof up to a point- like they can exist in a fire 1-2 hours depending on what you buy- does anyone know if thats true?

Re: Safety Deposit Box
My dad has one and puts jewelry and emergence money. I believe that most banks have it... they only open the vault to the safety deposit place when requested or certain hours. You have to pay for the box but its a good safe place to keep important documents.

You should bolt down the fireproof box because a thief can pick up the box and run with it.
I saw it on a show where they break into your house and show you how to take safety measures

Re: Safety Deposit Box
I have one. I keep all important paperwork, jewelry and old coins in there. I have one of those long skinny ones. Mine is at Teachers Federal Credit Union. I think it's $38 a year.

Re: Safety Deposit Box
My FIL gave us a safe when we bought our condo, but we haven't put anything in it yet! It's been 18 months. Lot of good that did!!
When we do finally start using it, I plan on putting our marriage license, deed, birth certificates, passports, car titles and condo ppwk in there. Any expensive jewelry we have, we wear every day.

How to Catch a Thief! DH and I love that show! It's pretty crazy. I can't believe how stupid people are with there stuff, but then again as a NYer I think differently than most people from other states.
Yes, the fireproof boxes are good up to a certain temp for so many hours. But if your co-op is on fire, it won't take 2 hours to put out, you know? The boxes also prevent water damage, so your marriage certificate and other papers are safe.

DH used to keep it under the bed. Duh, like no one would look under there. Now I have to find a new hiding spot since I've revealed my linen closet secret.
