I just got back from my HM pretty much and I took off from work 2 1/2 weeks from the wedding and then the HM. But I was reading that thread on name change info and of course the social security office isnt open on the weekends so I need another day off.
How soon did you guys change everything over?

3 years and I still haven't taken off to change it, I am just going to send it in.
you can mail it in and then you don't have to take off work for it. or can't you get a longer lunch break and go then?
I dont even get a lunch break as it is

I actually had this same problem. I actually TRIED to go to the social security office in Manhtattan during a lunch hour, but after waiting the ENTIRE HOUR in line and making no progress, I had to leave and get back to work
Since I couldn't take the time off from work to go to the S.S. office either, I mailed in all my stuff to my local SS office in Westchester. They got my new card and all my originals back to me very quickly, so I'm glad I did it that way in the end

I got a certified copy of the marriage license from the town hall and mailed it in.
And even if you don't take lunch usually, your job might be willing to give you an hour or two off, to get it done, rather than an entire day. Just a thought.

True, but I was thinking of doing the ss card and the DMV in one day. Well I have time... I just love to get things done. Plus DH is so giddy about me taking his name, so I am also trying to make him happy.

They say they will mail all of the documents back, but I would be nervous about sending in my originals. They don't take photocopies.
I just took the morning off of work to go to Social Security in person. After waiting for half an hour, I was told by the clerk that I can't do the paperwork today because I first need to get my driver's ID changed.
I was under the impression that I had to first get my SS card, then the driver's license. But they said because I live in MD I have to do it the other way around.
Diamondgirlie, I recommend you call Soc Sec and ask them which one you need to do first.
Oh, and while I was there, someone was complaining that Social Security lost the paperwork that she mailed in!

This is the same reason I havent changed mine over yet. I dont want to take another day off...
I wouldnt trust sending my originals in the mail either... Plus they want your drivers license. That means no driving till they get it back to you.

I took the day off two months after the wedding. Go to SS first thing in the morning...you will be in and out within an hour. THen on to DMV and i was done by noon.
Still have not done the passport thing.

can you go before work? tell them you will be in late? I think the SS office opens at 7am.

Do it by mail. I was dreading going to the SS office only to discover it was right across the street from my job!!!! I walked over and did it in the office, but I was kind of resolved that if I was going to be in line forever, I'd just mail it in. But I lucked out that day, the line wasn't too long.
