Since we're on the cop subject on NWR, how do the cops wives deal with the hours? (Or anyone who's husband works nights...)

Iam with you girls. My husband just switched to day tour after 5 years on the midnights so our lives were semi normal but now he seems to make more arrests which means more OT which is good but less time with me which is BAD.
I am 37 weeks pregnant and my husband hasn't been home since yeswterday morning. He had a big arrest and stayed at the Precinct. I am prepared for my water to break and for me to have to call an ambulance to get to the hospital but what can I do? I can't make him feel bad about it.
He, like all your hubbies, works his *** off!!!

I was in the same boat. My only consolation was that the hospital I was delivering at was actually closer to his precinct than our house, so he would be atthe hospital waiting forme when I got there. Luckily that didn't happen.

we have had a similar situation with dh working nights for many years with crappy days off...he just got sun and monday but its still hard b/c he is always workign overtime or has class...its hard and i am sure others feel the same way b/c you see other couples or talk to firneds and you just wonder why that can't be you.....
even still, we got back from vacation and i haven't spent more than 15 waking minutes with him.....how romantic!
my only positive spin of lookiing at it still is that we are still lucky enough to have each other - here on earth with us - i look at family and firneds who have lost their spouse/sig other to illness and death and at least i realize that alhtough we don't see each other that much, we do still have that person around...little as it might be at times..it also makes us appreciate them more soemtimes (and the reverse - we can get easily annoyed since we are upset with the situation rather than them!)
to you from someone who knows!!! (and is waiting on getting a new puppy til our house is done too!)

I hear you all on the hours!
LT wives, dont encourage them to be captains! its really not worth it they may get a raise, but its not much b/c OT is in TIME not cash plus his schedule may get better in 2 years or so but now its horrible, he never knows when he is working until every thursday and all the days are different for example off, then a midnite, then a 4-12 then a day tour or 10-6 its really crazy, its horrible that the higher you go for the first year or two you are like the low man on the totem pole so what kind of raise is that! plus, when I give birth, he said he will be able to be there for the birth but chances are they wont let him take his two weeks vac right away! something to do with the republican convention in NY that week! and no vac picks, days off,etc....... unreal how they do these stupid stupid things I guess if there is a next baby I will have to carefully plan what month it is in

Tam, my sister's fiance is a cop and their wedding is during the republican convention. He's terrified they won't give him off for the honeymoon!
And as for encouraging Patrick to be a captain... it's too late... he's determined to be one.
The studying in the months before the promotion tests KILLS me. He's constantly buried in that damn book. I miss him, and he's usually right next to me!

I didn't read anyone else's replies. I have to say that for me it's not easy. DH and have been together for 3 years now ( married a month) and the nights are what stink. He is on a 'boat chart' in Harbor in the city and he does 3 'sixteens' and then a week of day tours. The sixteens are what kill me. He starts @ 3:00 and is done @ 8:00 the next day. He does that 3 days in a row. He swears that he isn't tired but by the last one he is so cranky. When he is doing the night shifts, I usually go over my mothers house or have dinner with the girls. But even still I am sleeping in an empty bed for 3 nights every other week.. I knew what it entailed before we got married, and I am very proud of him. Just try to keep busy. I think that the winter has alot to do with it. When the summer comes you can do alot more. good luck!!!

It is not so bad, when he works a 24, but when he works 2 nite tours I dont see him for 2 days.
Once he gets promoted his schedule will change slightly.

My DH is not NYPD or NYFD but works for ConEd. He works rotating shifts which is a real pain in the A$$.
He works 7 straight days of 12-8 then 2 days off.
Then 7 straight days of 4-12 (the worst shift, don't get to see much of him all week) again 2 days off.
Then 6 days of 8-4 (starting on Sat so screws up the weekend)
Then he is off 3 days then he does 2 weeks of 8-4 M-F! These are the only NORMAL weeks!
Trying to plan things is HORRIBLE!!!!! Gotta check my marked calendar so I can tell what shifts he is working.
