Since we're on the cop subject on NWR, how do the cops wives deal with the hours? (Or anyone who's husband works nights...)

My husband is not NYPD yet but in the process of being hired. I some times think about the hours. He says not to worry about it and stuff but I know he will be getting these crazy hours especially in the beginning. I would like to hear about how other wives deal with this. I have no problem with him becoming NYPD as I have pushed him in some level but at that same time I guess I have to start getting use to not seeing him as much as I do now.

I know this is the wrong time to mention this to you, and I hope it's not upsetting, but I got a puppy to help with my loneliness.
Now that we are married 2.5 years and together for 9, I'm used to his schedule and don't mind it that much. In fact, since we had Nicolas, Pat's hours work to my advantage. He works a lot of 2pm - 10:30's, and we have an agreement that I take care of Nick during the night, but once 5:00am roles around, if Pat's not doing a day tour he takes over baby duty. It's great for me because I get some much needed sleep. Monday - Wednesday and Saturday I get to sleep as late as I want. It's a nice trade off for all the lonley nights I endured up till now.

My husband is a fireman. I think I am used to the wacky hours because my father was a cop, so I always knew what to expect. Sometimes it stinks, but for the most part you just get used to it.

Karen You are not the only one. Even though we have been together for a while, lately it has been real hard. The other night my husband left for work at 3:00 in the afternoon and came home 6AM the next morning. After telling me of his crazy night, he slept and woke up and went in again. It has seems VERY lonely lately, so I understand. I am trying to get involved with other things for myself to help with all the time I spend alone. It is very hard. Once you move and get familiar with the area, I think it may be a bit easier.

The worse is that he doesnt have a steady schedule so it is hard to make plans

I AGREE They deserve a medal a monument and anything else they want.... and so do their hubbies!
Karen-have you looked into hobby-related classes or workshops in your area? Most school districts have adult education classes on everything from boating to photography, or even take a class on an area of interest to you! (Literature, History).... The libraries also have weekly and monthly groups and things.... Once you have something to look forward to every week, Im sure you'll meet people in your neighborhood (and youd be surprised, maybe you'll meet others in the same exact boat) and before you know it, you can start up a 'girls night out' for coffee or ice cream and have a circle of friends going I hope my ideas werent too far-fetched, and I hope you worksomething out... I also LOVE being around people and hate loneliness
HUGS TO YOU! and you can always get a LIW GTG going...you'll see how fast you can get a group of us together!

My DH is an operating engineer and he now works the night shift. It has not been so bad because we are together during the evening. He used to work the 4PM-12AM shift and that was a lot harder.
I must say that I do not enjoy sleeping alone all the time.

At first I didn't mind the hours much because even though he works nights (5:30-2:00) he had the weekends off so we were able to spend a lot of time together and go out and do things. Unfortunatly a few weeks ago he transfered to a new unit where he now has Sundays and Mondays off so I never see him now except Sunday and Monday nights. Plus he is always working overtime so sometimes I feel like I don't see him at all. Lately, I have been so bored and depressed...I hate not being able to spend time with him. I guess it won't be bad when we have children since he is home during the day and I am home at night but since we hardly ever see eachother we will never be able to conceive.

Just wanted to add (not a cop's wife) but my husband does travel for business every month, something twice a month and I am alone for 3 day/nights, sometimes on the weekend too and it isn't easy. You get used to having someone in the house with you and you miss your honey when he is not home. I think if I was new to an area it would be MUCH harder. And honestly, the winter IMO makes it even harder because you are stuck in the house a lot more. I try to watch movies the DH wouldn't want to watch, go to the gym, make dinner for friends, have a lunch date. I know the library has lots of very low-cost classes to help you learn a new hobby too- maybe you could met new friends there.
I am sure you get used to the difficult hours after a while but that doesn't mean you have to ever like them.
