So, I was reading the swine flu/obama thread, and I noticed that some people say 'black' whereas some ppl say 'african american' or 'person of color.'
Since when is it 'bad' to say black? Especially b/c not ALL black people are 1) African 2) American. And person of color can refer to people other than black people, no? I'm confused on this, b/c I honestly thought it was socially acceptable to still say 'black' and 'white'

Maybe I am ignorant but I say black, white and latino/a. People try soooo hard to be P.C. and sometimes it just complicates things.

Re: Since we're on the topic...
I have friends who say they would rather be called black than AA. But, some people get all up in arms when you dont say AA. I'm not sure how to refer to people these days.

I edited my post cause i dont want to offend anyone. But, yeah, it gets really tricky. Pointing might be less offensive

I dont see nothing wrong with the word 'black' 'white' or 'hispanic' I am 'hispanic' 'latin' wtvr...I think if you use 'black' 'white' 'hispanic' in a way as to offenD then obviously it is taken that way, but just say he's black or she's white or she's spanish, hispanic, or latina or use those 'words' I find nothing wrong with it.

I usually say black cus a lot of my friends who are black are not of african decent- more of caribbean. but I guess they were from african decent at one point, but they consider themselves caribbean more than african because the african part was sooooooo long ago.

I just say black. I always refer to people as Black or White. It worked for Michael Jackson in that song and it works for me.

i say black -- since as others have mentioned, i know plenty of people who are black but not necessarily african american, and do not want to be referred to as such. (i.e.--Dominican, west indies nations, etc)

Ok i reallly really dont mean for this to start drama. Esp with you Melissa BUT since when are Dominicans considered Black I always thought we were Latinos. I could care less either way but that was kind of surprising.
Sometimes people cant really tell. I may be able to tell when someone is hispanic. So they say black to go the safe route I guess
BTW LOOOOOVE THE AVATAR!!!! Your welcome!

But the thing is that it's done even by Latinos so I dont see the big deal. I dunno I think I just have a higher sensitive tolerance then most. I even deleted my comment to avoid further
