So, I was reading the swine flu/obama thread, and I noticed that some people say 'black' whereas some ppl say 'african american' or 'person of color.'
Since when is it 'bad' to say black? Especially b/c not ALL black people are 1) African 2) American. And person of color can refer to people other than black people, no? I'm confused on this, b/c I honestly thought it was socially acceptable to still say 'black' and 'white'

i say black -- since as others have mentioned, i know plenty of people who are black but not necessarily african american, and do not want to be referred to as such. (i.e.--Dominican, west indies nations, etc)
Ok i reallly really dont mean for this to start drama. Esp with you Melissa BUT since when are Dominicans considered Black I always thought we were Latinos. I could care less either way but that was kind of surprising.
What I meant was that when you look at someone initially and if someone asked you describe the race, without knowing their background or nationality, and you see someone who apparently looks black...I wouldn't automatically say 'They are African American' - because not everyone who is black is AA. I have a few Dominican friends who consider themselves black AND latino and refer to themselves as so.
But if I know what someone's nationality is, I would most certainly say they are Latino or Dominican or some friends who are from the West Indies perfer Caribbean.

Yeah you're right. I just think as Latinos we are more Nationalist then anything. My caribbean friends are the same. They prefer either Caribbean black or Jamaican, Guyaneese(sp?) etc.
