Re: social security/name change question

DARN - I forgot about this.

SS was the first thing I changed despite the fact that I had received the advice that you described in your post. Oh well, wedding brain and now we're gonna pay for it.

I had just heard that many girls start with SS and continue the process from there so I didn't think twice about it. I would just stick to your plan and change your SS card shortly after filing taxes.

Re: social security/name change question

why do you want to wait till you file your taxes?

what difference does that make... you can still file joint or seperate regardless

Re: social security/name change question

my parents tax advisor mentioned there were 'benefits' to not switching your name...regardless of whether you file joint/seperate. of course I don't remember the details (he mentioned this last year when he was filing my taxes and knew my wedding was in 2010) and of course i forgot to heed his advice.

Re: social security/name change question

i believe it has something to do with a hefty tax associated with marriage but i really don't recall.

Re: social security/name change question

I will ask my parent's accountant after the holidays. I'll probably call to make my appt in early Jan and see if I can get some details on the phone.
