Some domesticated questions....

Some domesticated questions....

1 - How do you clean your gas stovetop, in specific, the grates? I have cast iron grates and they are a pain to clean!!! I soak and scrub and srub and they still look stained....plus they are getting white marks from all the scrubbing! I heard alittle amonia may do the trick but I am scared to try.

2 - Do you sanitize your sink after cleaning/handling chicken or other meats and if so what do you use? I usually use 409 but my sister uses bleach spray.

3 - Do you use separate cutting boards for meat and veggies?

great questions!

1. can't really help you on this since we are totally lazy about the grates themselves, but how about using a brillo pad?

2. we definitely spray the sink after handling chicken/meat. we just use our surface cleaner which is one of those 'green' ones on the market. we are trying to stop using so many chemicals in the house although i still douse the bathroom in bleach

3. YES! we have different colored cutting boards so DH knows green is for veggies and red is for meat!

Hi!

I put the grates in the dishwasher and it seems to do the trick. My grates are pretty big but I just run them by themselves and it seems to work. I try and use a degreaser before I do that but the grates are big for my sink, its a bit of a PIA.

Try it and see...

I use bleach after I handle chicken and any raw meat and use seperate cutting board for raw meats, cooked meats and reg chopping.

2 - yes i usually use clorox all purporse cleaner and a little bleach

3 - DH doest eat veggies, so i rarely buy them... when i do, they are of small amounts and usually cut already

1) I have the SAME issue! So if u find something useful PLEASE let me know!

2) I always use bleach. Clorox-Cleanup.

3) I don't use separate cutting boards so long as i'm not using it all at once. if this is the case veggies first, meat last, or i'll even just cut veggies on a plate.
...But otherwise i always run it through the dishwasher twice & then scrub it down with bleach. I'm paranoid when it comes to bacteria lol.

Re: Some domesticated questions....

I tend to be 'green' when it comes to cleaning, I don't like to use a lot of chemicals or bleach to clean.

1. I soak the grates, the trays and the little burner toppers in hot water with baking soda. Seems to do the trick to loosen up any of the gunk that builds up. A nylon scrubber with some more baking soda handles anything that sticks. About once a month I do run them thru the dishwasher.
I wipe down the stove top with a little baking soda and hot water, then rinse with plain water. A little spritz of windex makes it shine.

2. I wipe out the sink and countertop with a clorox wipe, let it dry and then rinse everything with hot water. The sink also gets a light rubdown with baking soda too. The baking soda acts as a light abrasive without scratching and also deodorizes the drain.

3. My cutting boards are plastic so they go thru the dishwasher. My wooden board is only used for bread.

I usually clean the stove after I cook, if any sauce or anything drops on it. The grates I use a sponge

For the sink I will also scrub with a sponge using a little bit of ajax and then I spray sanitizing scrubbing bubbles, let that sit for a bit and then wash it off

I'll just use the other side of the cutting board

Re: Some domesticated questions....

1. DH cleans the grates on our gas stove. The ceramic part of the stove (is it ceramic?) we clean with the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser - it's the BEST thing for getting anything off the stove and you don't have to scrub too hard. I think DH cleans the grates with a brillo pad, soap, and hot water. He gets them very clean.

2. I bought a spray bottle and made a spray with water and some bleach (per the instructions on the bleach bottle, although honestly I added a bit more bleach than recommended). I spray the sink after I've done the dishes and if I have had meat or anything like that in there.

3. I registered for and got the 4 pack of plastic, flexible, thin cutting boards that are marked for different kinds of foods. So I use the appropriate one for each - aka, I only cut meat on the red/meat board, only cut veggies on the green/veggie one, etc.

Re: Some domesticated questions....

1. I have an electric stove where the grates are attached to the stove top, so it's a total pain to clean them, so I can't really answer this question. I always end up having to try to squeeze my hand under the grates to try to clean under them, and I never feel like I can get it fully clean. Needless to say, I hate my stove.

2. I spray my sink with bleach spray and let it sit for a minute or too before scrubbing and rinsing. I try to do this at least once a day.

3. I wouldn't use the same cutting board for meat and veggies at the same time, but mine is dishwasher safe, so I feel like once it's gone thru the dishwasher it's clean for next time.

Softscrub works great. I suggest it for all of the cleaning things. The grates and sink.
I do not use different cutting boards. I have two plastic and one wood and they all go in dishwasher when done.

1 - I use Orange Glo/Fantastic with orange oil in it. Cuts thru every thing.

2 - 409 doesn't sanitize. You should use clorox bleach (1 tbsp to 1 gallon of water is all that you need. Also DONT wipe it. Spray and walk away. I learned this on the Food Network last night!)

3 - You HAVE to use 2 different cutting boards other wise you can cross contaminate your food. You should use wood for anything you can eat raw (fruits, veggies) and a plastic board for meats, fish, etc. It can go in the dishwasher and if you dont have a dishwasher, after you clean it with warm sudsy water, you sanitize it with the water/bleach spray as approve.

I use bleach for everything so that would be my answer for all three ?'s! I clean my grates w/ it, sink, and the 1 cutting board after I use meat on it.

Re: Some domesticated questions....

1. I usually just put them in the dishwasher (they end up coming out perfect!) but otherwise for a quick clean up I use clorox clean up and/or brillo

2. I use Clorox Clean up to clean just about everything in my kitchen and bathroom. After handling meats I usually just spray down the counters and sink and then wipe it up

3. I have seperate cutting boards

Re: Some domesticated questions....

1- i clean the stove top after each use...everything is wiped with Lysol disinfecting spray

2-i dont do an extra disinfecting if i've washed chicken or raw meat in the sink...but when all the dishes are clean i always spray it down with the Lysol

3- we bought the separate cutting boards that are different colors and have the cow, chicken and veggie on them. but the color runs and they warp with hot foods. sometimes i'll boil meat so it is more tender before i cut it or to get some of the salt out...the hot meat on these cutting boards = a hot mess. i stick with my one good wood cutting board and just wash it thoroughly after each use

Re: Some domesticated questions....

I don't have cast iron grates so I can't help there.

I usually just wash the area with hot soapy water.

I rarely use separate cutting boards. Funny thing about this is that I went to culinary school and they scare the crap out of you in Food Safety class. I remember going home to my parent's house and buying cutting boards and labeling them. My mom was so pissed at me-she was like we've been using this cutting board for years and you're still alive. I was so gung ho about it. Dork.

I have the same problem with my stove.

I use a clorox spray to clean up everywhere all the time. I also use the clorox wipes to clean up counters.

I don't have designated separate boards. If I have to cut meat then veggies, I clean the board thoroughly. Sometimes I just have no room for another board.
