with DH!! (please dont quote)

so DH was diagnosed with sever sleep apneia which causes him to snore and gasp for air all night long which has sent me to the couch in the middle of the night for many many months! and i always get mad. so he got a breathing machine in January he used it 3 times half a night he hates it and says hes not going to use it!
last night he comes home and says hes going to start sleeping on the pull out bed in the living room! and i got upset i want to sleep in bed with my husbad!!!!! that is not a solution!!! he is not himself hes tired all the time and never wants to do anything.! he says he might look into this surgery where they put this thing int he back of his throat! but its taking forever to find a solution!

My uncle has to use this machine and it has helped him so much. He actually sleeps through the night!

I can imagine your frustration. Instead of trying to get him to exercise, why not just start off by making sure he is eating right. Does he bring his lunch to work? I pack a lunch for my DH.

That is totally frustrating and I can see why you are upset. It sounds like this is really effecting his (and your) quality of life. I would keep looking into surgery/ treatment....bc this problem will be life long if not. I am so sorry sweetie

My DH also has sleep Apnea! It is so annoying. He has tried the machin3 several times, but he hates it because in the middle of the night it moves and then it wakes him up. I was just reading someting on LIF about a pillow that is supposed to help position the mask better. Has your Dh tried all the different masks to see if any of them fit his face better? My DH has a full mask that covers the mouth and nose. I feel ya thought cause DH is always tired and has to take a nap everyday!!

Here is the pillow:

Re: sooo frustrated!

I can really comiserate with you.
My husband is overweight, snores so loud, and has what I call the thumping legs.
I don't know what's worse - the snoring or the legs that make the whole bed shake even with a tempurpedic mattress.
I've spent a couple of nights on the couch just to get a good nights sleep.

Just talk with him about trying the machine for a bit longer. He needs to get used to it. There are special pillows designed to accomodate the mask, if comfort is a problem for him. Or find out if there is another mask that he could use.

My husband won't get tested for sleep apnea, so he's got to lose weight. Sleep apnea does more to the body than just keep a partner awake.

Hang in there - I've got a den that I am seriously considering converting into my bedroom.
Maybe Lucy and Desi had it right with separate beds !

Re: sooo frustrated!

Hi Linda...I'm soo sorry you're going through this.

I have sleep apnea and the machine has been a life saver. It takes a while to get used to it. I only have the mask that covers the nose. Yes here and there I wake up because I shift and it moves but for the most part I've gotten used to it. But you have to be persisitent with it.

When I first got it it was really hard to adjust to it, but I made myself do it. Sleep apnea can cause weight gain, bad anxiety, depression, a nd so many other issues including death. Hopefully your DH will try to get back on it again.

Something the tech told me to do to get used to it was to just sit with the machine while I watched TV, that would get me used to the air flow, the noise and the head gear. It worked. I would wear it the duration of one show and then I would put it on at night to go to sleep.

maybe have him try it again each night and eventually he should get used to it...

I am sorry Linda!!! That is a rough situation.
I had sleep apnea and I know what it is like to not get a full night of sleep.. it changes you emotional and physically. Losing weight is a great option, if he will excersise and eat right-

DH uses the machine. He takes it off in the middle of the night usually but, he does sleep much better.

Tell him to keep trying. It took DH a little while to get used to it. Now, he sleeps like a baby when it's on.

Re: sooo frustrated!

If he tries the CPAP machine for an extended period of time and it doesn't work for him it will be documented on insurance and he could try to get one of those mouthpieces instead.

I know because I'm going through the same thing right now. I HATE the CPAP machine. But I had to use it for a short period of time to have it documented that it wasn't working for me so I could get the orthodontic mouthpiece. I would have your DH talk to his Dr. about that.

HTH.

Re: sooo frustrated!

MY DH had the machine as well. He hated it, but he had to use it b/c he would stop breathing for like 30 seconds at a time then gasp for air. We both went on WW and he lost about 75 pounds and it went away. The doctor told him to lose weight first before the surgery was considered, and thankfully it worked.

Men suck when it comes to dieting - my DH did little to no exercise and lost it in less than a year... but thankfully he's sleeping better, longer and is healthy. So maybe just get DH to eat better and the pounds will just come off!
