spending money

spending money

I am so good about spending money, I am the saver....DH always says how I should buy myself things more often. But I am so focused on paying off credit cards and saving for a house...
I want to join a gym that will cost a lot, and I cant seem to justify it. DH says it is a lot of money, but to join if it makes me happy. I dont know what to do.
I splurge on things like our vacations, that is where I spend money...we have a big trip coming up soon. So, I dont know...do you guys think $70 bucks a month is too much for a gym?

Re: spending money

I think joining a gym is really important, it's for your health, and if you feel it's too much money, what about a less expensive gym?

Or, just cut out some other luxuries...but a gym membership is excellent and good for you.
It's almost good that you are concerned about the money, becaue if you do it, you'll probably really want to get your money out of it.

Re: spending money

I say go for it.

Then again, I am a spender. But if it will make you feel good about yourself it is worth it.

Are you going to go? I only ask because I have joined gyms and signed contracts and went for a month and stopped. Big waste (for me).

But if you are going to use it, I think it is worth it for sure.

YES i think there are better deals than 70 a month!!
You should look into package rates...they are usually lower

also check with your health insurance - because some reimburse partially for gym memberships

though some require you show you go regularly

Re: spending money

My gym costs about 70 bucks a month. The way I like to think of it is this:

There are so many things I purchase that are not good for me(say a $10 martini at blue honu on a friday night) so why would I not spend 70 bucks a month to do something good for myself?

That's my rationale for it.

The way I look at it is this...

If you could buy good health, a fit body and more confidence for $70 a month would you do it?

I would! You spend much more on stuff that is bad for you and frivolous, I am sure.

Definitely spend the money on yourself -- but do some shopping -- $70 a month is alot -- you can definitely join a nice gym for far less!!

Re: spending money

Christy, if I could find a gym closer to me that I really liked I would pay the $70. I personally think it is so worth it.

I tried a gym closer to me that cost less and I HATED IT!!!

Re: spending money

Here's the thing....If the gym was very important to me, I would, but I know I go to the gym rarely so it wouldn't be worth that to me. My DH spends that much on a gym, but goes at least 1 hour 6 days a week. I do belong to a gym, but it is more a Curves type place and it was $20 a month.

Re: spending money

I think you should join the gym. Feeling good about yourself and being healthy will pay you back 10-fold! $70 a month does seem high to me for a gym membership. I don't know what the gym offers or which gym it is, but if you want to justify that price I would just shop around some of the other gyms and see what they offer for their price and decide from there.

Good luck

Re: spending money

You should actually check with your company to see if they have any gym benefits (or discounted employee deals)or check with your insurance company. I remember at one time my health insurance paid a certain amount of my membership (I think $200 a year) as long as I went 10 times a year or something.

ETA: Belonging to a gym is a great idea, definately worth the money. I suffer from high blood pressure and since I started going back to gym I've seen so much improvement in my blood pressure and also I lost a few needed pounds. Belonging to a gym is jelping me get myself together healthwise and weightwise b/f Dh and I start TTC.

Hope this helps!!

If it's a nice place, then I would do it. You get what you pay for. I spend about that much on my membership and I love my gym. They are constantly updating equiptment, have great classes and it's very clean and well-kept.

A friend of mine got a deal at a Lucille Roberts- like $350 for 3 years. She tried to talk me into bagging my gym to join LR, but this one had fewer amenities and was kind of run down. Plus, I didn't like the 3 year comittment.

I also like that my gym is month to month. If I were you, I would avoid long-term contracts if you can.

ETA- I actually got a corportate rate since I am employed by NYC. Did you see if something like that was available?

Re: spending money

Thank you so much for all of the feedback. The gym that costs that much is the new york sports club, and my insurance and job will not pay any of it. I looked into bally's too, which was indeed cheaper (not too much cheaper), but I didnt like the gym as much. I am still debating this one. I dont know if I trust myself to go very often, of couse I would love to. But I have never been great a working out, I am trying to change all that. You guys are so helpful, thank you so much.

What gyms do you all like and go to?

Re: spending money

I would have no problem spending $70 a month on a gym membership if I really liked the gym. DH and I used to belong to World Gym which was really cheap but I HATED going there. He didn't really care either way. Now we go to Gold's and it's $45 a month and I like it so much better.

$70 is a lot to pay, but since you're so good about how you spend your money, maybe it'll be motivation for you to go on a regular basis
I would also talk to the gym and ask them if they have any deals. You never know what they might offer you!

Re: spending money

If you go regularly its not that much!
They way I thought of it when I had my membership is, I went 3x a week, so if hte cost is $70 a month, thats really only $5.84 per visit, to me thats a bargin for something you enjoy for an hour or more of 'you' time!
That same formula is also what made me quit the gym, when I stopped going regularly and it was now like $10 a visit it wasnt quite paying off anymore!

Re: spending money

I am a big saver as well. I feel the same way, if you want certain things you have to save. Joining a gym is good for health reasons. So, if you are going to join a gym, I would join one that is half the price. I know Luicelle Robert's is a lot cheaper, I would look into that. Also, you won't feel guilty spending the money if you don't go as often as you would like.

Re: spending money

see, i'm both a saver and a spender. i will save and save and save but buy stupid little ridiculously unnecessary things. however, when it comes to food and health, don't skimp out. treat your body well and if a 70$ month gym will help you do that, do it!
