Spinoff: Marilyn Monroe or Lindsey Lohan?

I put this title just to tie it in to the other post cause it sorta relates, but i am not bashing Lindsey Lohan in any way. what I am having a rant about, is the media's growing acceptance of all this body image/size craziness.

Its something that was bothering me today cause I went shopping last night and got annoyed, and it just tied into this topic I think. So thats all it is. No bashing, just venting.

To go off on a bit of a tangent here.....

Lindsey (who looked great as herself but not as one of the most famous sex symbols of all time) is a greate example of trying to fit into crazy standards. We all know the poor girl yo-yos with her weight and has more issues than even Brit. She looks health'IER' here but still a little on the thin side.

Like ok maybe she wanted to be Marilyn but don't ya think the photographers,/magazine people should have given her a sandwich first? its almost like they're saying the 'new' Marilyn is a size 0.

Maybe thats kooky and just me, but I am becoming mroe sensitive to this weight issue because I see how clothing stores are making size tags smaller and smaller. I went into Ann Taylor Loft the other day and was all kinds of pissed. I LOVE their clothes for work and they always have amazing sales. So I am a fan of them.

BUT...I fit into a 0 there. Yea you're probabyl sayign 'WHY are you complaining?!' WHY? Because I am NOT nor ever HAVE been, even when I weighed 105 pounds, a zero! My mom is a seamstress among ehr many other talents and when she sewed for me in the past when she did it more, i was always a size 6-8 pattern and then she altered it. Patterns are standard across the board-have been since the days of marilyn.

So I KNOW I am no size 0 because pattern standards are based on measurements. Mine very firmly put me into the size 6 category. I am a woman of a little above average height with VERY full hips and junk in my trunk and no boobs. I have always been and STILL AM in most stores, a size 4-6. So I have always wondered if little old ME is a size 0 in Ann's, what is a really thin, 100 pound girl to wear?

The answer is 00 and XXS......I kid you not.

HOW can you get below a 0?????? They are supposed to be comign out with a triple 000 one of their employees told me. For heaven's sake!

I know it may sound crazy but seriously..if you are naturally thin, nothing wrong with that. Some girls ARE really a 0. Thats fine. But I am NOT and I am insulted by the ininusation that my size 4-6 is considered so 'FAT' and taboo, that they need to mask it by putting a tag on it that saysI am a zero or 00. Seriously...enough is enough.

Marilyn Monroe was a size 12 and got the attention of our president. Sophia Loren had men falling over themselves to hand her plates of spaghetti lmao. Curves are ok!

Oh really? isn't it aggravating? I never know what frickin size I am! Macys and Bloomingdales seem to be staying true to size with their designers but Ann's is RIDICULOUS. They make me feel fat because even though the tag says 0, I know I am not so its liek my real size is a shameful secret we have to hide. Which is CRAZY!!!!

I have my body issues like everyone else but I know I dont look bad in my clothes and I am a slim girl. Maybe not as much as I would like to be but I am ok. Size 4 is not a crime Fashion People! Its like the Salem witchtrials all over again

ITA.

I think they call it 'feel good sizing' and it is, sadly, the result of marketing studies that show that women are more likely to buy an item of clothing if the size on it is smaller than their normal size. Woman tend to get a little high or thrill out of being told by the tag that they are a smaller size than their regular size. This little thrill is supposed to send us right up to the register to buy these things - pronto.

The Gap and Banana have been doing this for years.

And, I think I read once that Marilyn was a size 12 back in the day when a 12's measurements were equal to the measurements for today's 6. Still bigger than Lindsay is but much smaller than the average American woman - who actually wears the new size twelve, which seems like it would have to be like a 18/20 back then!

The old standard measurements are what many companies still use to make wedding dresses since they have not altered their sizing.

So if you were shopping back when Marilyn did - it is likely your wedding dress size would be an indicator of what your regular/traditional clothing size was.

These were Marilyn's stats :

Height: 5 feet 5 1/2 inches
Weight: Varied, 115 - 120 lbs.
Measurements: 37-23-36 (Studio's Claim);
35-22-35 (Dressmaker's Claim)

She would be about a size 6 to 8 in today's size charts.

Being a big girl, I have size envy. I don't care what the number says, I just want the garment to fit well and be long enough in the arms and legs to fit my 5'10' frame.

While we are on a clothing rant, let me chime in.
I can't understand why plus-sized clothing manufacturers cut everything so short. Sorry, but low waisted pants DO NOT look good on someone with a thick waist or a roll. Not to mention that they sit funny. Why do shirts, tees and jackets have to fall to the upper hip, usually the most unflattering point on a big girl's body ?

{chuckle} sorry about taking over this topic. Jenn, forgive me ?

Exactly..They LOWERED the sizing from a 12 to a 6. Theres no reason to.Its the media that has made it so taboo for a woman to feel obese if she is larger than a 6 that now the marketing is on it and its absolutely ridiculous ebcause it is perpetuating the problem. There is NOTHING WRONG with being a larger size.

I will say obseity isn't healthy which we all know, but neither is being so thin you look like a starving somalian child.

I am an average size-My wedding dress I forget the size hoenstly. I think maybe it was a 4 or a 6. All i know s they wanted to squeeze me into the smaller size and i said HELL no lol.

Yet I am being made to feel liek crap because apparently a 6 is too big to show on a tag so they're using 000 to sze 4 now...Just nonsense.

Suse get on with your rantign self! LOL. Thats what I qant! We need to take back the clothing industry.

Its really silly. I know I have the issue with most women's jeans being either sooo low rise that ahlf my *** ahngs out or 'Mommy jeans' from the 80's with the tab covering your belly button lol. And tapered legs!

I wore jeans to school a few times when I was student teaching on our messy art days, till I realized that I was mooning ym kids each time I squatted down. STILL trying to find jeans with a good rise for women with a behind.

And dont get me started on those new 'Cheekies' undies by VS lmao NOTHING cute about seeing half my butt coming out on top in rolls and half on the bottom.

ETA: Marilyns stats were WOWZA.

31, 26, 39 not so impressive

OMG!!! Jenn I am sooo tired of looking at anorexic models...it seriously grosses me out to see some of these runway models...i like Dove's recent 'campaign for real beauty' and wish more companies would get on board! Even Dh thinks they are disgusting to look at.

As someone who was borderline anorexic in HS it sickens me to think that woman equate their self worth to the scale or clothing size...i used to think that the skinnier i was the 'better' I was. Well now i know better and can appreciate my heavier but much healthier body. Dh loves my big old butt...even when it is on the bigger side..and always says he will love me no matter what...haha....i want to stay active and healthy but i do not want it to be an all consuming part of life like it used to be.

I think that all of us on this board were beautiful brides...and we came in all shapes and sizes..and if only we could get the rest of the world to take notice!!!!

these photos are EVERYTHING that makes a woman beautiful!!!!! Jen i can't agree with u more....it's so aggravating to me...i have to admit, when i was away at school i lost a TON of weight.. not at my own will...more because i was trecking through the city, dancing 7 days a week, blah blah blah...now when i WAS that thin - i loved it...it was really enticing when my pants would drop to my hipbones(that showed) and people would comment on how much weight i've lost etc.....when i was DONE with school, i put on a normal amount of weight but majorly toned up for the wedding...i was entirely frustrated at the time that i wasn't the size i was or thinner... and all of a sudden one day DH(fh at the time) was like 'Can i be honest with you' (yep of course) 'I really like ur body MUCH better now. u have sexy curves, yet ur toned and it's just hot'....my mouth nearly hit the floor...to hear it from him was a reasurance..and he WAS right. When i was super thin, for one i lost my boobs ENTIRELY..i had NOTHING there(and i'm small to begin with)...i just had no shape.i was just 'skinny'. and honestly, since the day josh said that i've had a whole new outlook on my body...sure i have moments where i think about being thinner...i think every woman does - but i've gained so much more confidence in the last year....and jen - dont even get me STARTED on the size tags....i've seen those '00's...and the fact that i can get my botty into a size '1'?!?! i mean it feels good to see the tag - but c'mon...a size 4 or 5 is NOWHERE NEAR FAT!!!!! so why do they do that??? i just dont get it...and the media is entirely RIDICULOUS with their 'L.A. Thin' trend...i mean c'mon...look at kim kardashian...and look at these photos of jessica simpson...u tell ME which is more attractive...her with infamous curves....or this?!?!?!!!!!

Re: Spinoff: Marilyn Monroe or Lindsey Lohan?

Real women have curves.

I was raised in a household that valued curves - SKINNY was NOT attractive, in fact I would hear things like, wow that actress is TOO skinny, that model is tooo thin. As a latina, I was raised to see curves (booty, hips, thighs, etc) as a positive thing.

I love my curves. I DO wish I had less of them (specifically the 'curves' in my big tummy and big arms ) but I love having booty, hips, thighs. I wish I was thinner, but I'm not a size 0, 2, or 6 to begin with. I am realistic - I would look much better if I lost some weight - it's difficult for me, but I'd like to try.

I do think that a woman with curves looks infinitely more attractive than a skinny woman, but that's my personal opinion. Thankfully, my DH feels the same way, but I know other guys that think a big booty is nasty and only like women that have flat booties or only if they have big boobs etc.

Guys that find big butts 'nasty' just acnt handle it Yesi! We're too much woman.

What I always found hardwas growing up ina LAtino househoold, you watch telenovelas and all the actresses were slim yes, but slim with BIG booties and hips and boobs and they were all curvy. On game shows, same thing. Yet when i started watching American TV and saw all these crazy skinny models, I felt torn. I preffered the look of the Latinas on the telenovelas but the American models were the 'IT' girls.

I think its hard when cultural aspects come into play. DH fortunately loved my big behind. I'd gotten oevr ym anorexia by the time we met but was still struggling some months and he said the same thigny our DH said, taryn: Told me he prefers my curves because he (all his words NOT mine) LMAO 'I like when your @ss smushes all over me and cradles me and its so juicy.... I don't like it when your hip poens threaten to poke out my %#*&'

AH eloquence, your name is my husbandd.

We are some hot women, ladies. We dont need to be worrying about ANYTHING!

I soo agree and thankfully for me too, my husband LOVES curves and a 'thicker' woman. When we're watching tv and he sees a real thin actress, he actually cringes.

I was actually a bit offended when JLO was supposedly trying to lose her butt instead of being proud of her body.

If thin is the thing to be, then why are there so many boob implants and butt implants ?
