How did DH handle it when you discussed it? Was there anyone that was overly upset about it? What are your plans for when you have children?
Just wondering...

Re: spinoff - those that did not chance their name
oops forgot to answer...
DH was soo wonderful he never questioned me and just said that it was my decision.
Some friends were super shocked, his mother was soo upset at first and said to me 'how do you plan to be a real part of the family if you hvae a different last name?' can you imagine??? and my Aunt flipped out on my at a Thanksgiving dinner in front of my entire family saying 'I was disrespecting my husband by not taking his name'
I'm not really sure what the situation with children will be. People have told me it may be difficult with medical stuff, not having the same last name as my children, but I'm just not sure of what to do. I was considering changing it when I had kids but that just may be an excuse....not really sure about this one.

I haven't changed it yet- and right now I don't plan on it
Jake might change his to mine- he likes it better- but not while his Grandpa is alive
once we have kids- one of us will change it

Re: spinoff - those that did not change their name
I changed my name.....
But.....I have two stories.
My mom didn't change her name, BUT people started calling her Mrs. D instead of Ms. D, so eventually, she gave in and became Mrs. Linton. But that was in the 70's, hopefully those things have changed!
And my BIL (DH's sister's husband) took our last name. She was pregnant when they got married and said she wanted Sophia to have her last name, and he wanted to have the same last name as his daughter. His family FREAKED, like majorly freaked. People can be so close minded, but it worked out in the long run.
To be honest, I just think it is a little weird that she goes by 'Mrs Devine', shouldn't it have stayed 'Ms Devine'? But I don't know, not a judgment, just a thought.

Re: spinoff - those that did not change their name
I added w/o a hyphen sooo I am kind of in between but when I was on the fence, DH was really supportive of what I decided either way. Our children will have his name. I kind of what my maiden name as their middle name but it's not a typical middle name sooo DH doesn't like that idea...but we shall see...
ETA: My/His family are fine with it (or at least I haven't heard anything). My Dad doesn't like hyphenated names so I don't think he really likes what I did but whatever!!! I have some guy friends who are so set that it's disrespectful not to take the name, etc and some who don't care---we all had an interesting discussion about it once.

He was fine with it. He has a very long last name that he doesn't use professionally and he said he wouldn't have expected or asked me to take it.
When we have kids the plan is for them to have my last name, although I am worried about people thinking he's not their real dad.

I changed my name but if my husband didn't request it, I probably wouldn't had done it. My father told me I had to! But no matter what it IS your personal choice. I made a promise to my DH and I kept it and it turned out alright.
I think that if the guys are ok with it, and you are, then it shouldn't be an issue. Some guys are ok, and some (like my DH) are not.

My parents were not thrilled with my decision. DH was fine with; he wanted me to do whatever made me comfortable/happy. I don't want to have children so I'm not worried the possiblity of needing/wanting to changing it later.

My DH was fine with it. I know some might disagree, but a guy that is not okay with it would not have been for me. If/when we have kids, they will have his last name. If there becomes an issue about not having the same name, I'll carry a copy of their birth certificate in my wallet. I'll also create quite a stink if I have to. For the most part before the wedding, we only talked about it with people who asked. Some people still don't realize that I have kept my name, even though my law practice name is my name!

Re: spinoff - those that did not change their name
i kept my own name - i was already in busniess and didn't want to have to change my licneses - my husband understood and his family surpised me and they understood
to me it was either i kept my name or we created a new last name - i like thins equal - i wans't chaning a thousand things without him doing it too
if we have children - i will either give them my last name for their middle name and keep the birth certificate and/or i will always keep a notorized paper that i am the mother

Re: spinoff - those that did not change their name
Honestly-- I mentioned it on our first date... I however changed my mind and decided to hyphenate- and use my name professionally and his socially. But, I haven't quite done anything about it.

I kept my last name too. My hubby said it was up to me... his parents doesn't know yet, I'm not sure how they'll feel... but it's not their choice. My family is all for me not changing my name (my mom kept her name too).
As for our children, they will take hubby's last name.
