SPINOFF to eating disorder question

the eating disorder question got me thinking about people who have people in their lives that are battling any type of mental illness... like depression, anxiety, alcoholism, drug problems etc etc

so how many of us have people close to us that are battling an addiction and/or a mental health issue?

personally, i have someone in my life that is an alcoholic and someone who is VERYYYY depressed. when i was younger and my father lived with us (before my parents got divorced) i had to deal with his bi polar

ETA: none of these ppl are DH.... if it was, you KNOW you ladies would know about it! lol

Someone in DHs immediate family is battling drug/alcohol addiction for most of DHs life. It's very very sad.

DH is used to his ups and downs (mostly downs) but now that he's older he knows how to deal with it better. It's very tough for his entire family

DH's brothers are alcoholics. One of them JUST stopped drinking, I think he's on his 8th week and the other one has no desire to quit drinking. He doesn't think it's a problem. Meanwhile, he has no $$ because he blows whatever $$ he has on beer, he has no where to live because he lost his job due to his drinking and he's screwed over most of his family because of his selfishness from his drinking. It's a very sad disease.

DH's father was an alcoholic. It caused a huge rift between him and DH. He has since passed.

it really really is. mainly b/c there is nothing you can do or say to that person to 'make' them stop drinking.

Like they say on that show Intervention - the person has to hit rock bottom before they can accept help. But sometimes, that person doesn't even recognize they've hit bottom.

I, myself, am on meds for anxiety and depression. I mean, not like depression where I want to commit suicide but it's still there a little, altho the meds keep it very under control. DH used to have drug problems (long before I knew him) and he's recently been having some depression and mood swings. It's been very scary to see I am very worried about him, but he says he's gonna start to look into seeing a therapist, so I am hoping he does

my mother battled with alcoholism and drug addiction, and it took her away 3 weeks before her 38th bday.

i lived with this until i was 13 years old, then our family got split up. we saw her drink, do drugs. she treated me more as a friend than a daughter, so she was very frank and open about what she did, but she never admitted she had a problem. my brother was too young to understand what was going on, and today he battles with his own drug problems, as well as behavioral problems which have kept him in and out of jail since he's 16. he'll be 27 in july and will celebrate yet another bday behind bars.

i suffered from depression for a long time, even now i still have some bouts, but not like i used to. for me, it was that i was stuck living in the past, dwelling on things that could never be changed. as a mother to be, i know i've learned a lot about what a mother should NOT be from my own mother. all i can do is look forward and know that i will be the best mother i can be.

ETA: when people ask how my mom died, i often lie and say cancer (which my step-mom died from) because i still feel ashamed about how she really died.

Oh Tina
I think I knew a teeny bit of this ... but how sad about your mom and brother. I hope that your brother can work out his issues and find help. I know that you will be a GREAT mom - do not worry about that please!!!

I've posted about my sister before. She was everything under the sun. Alcohol/drug abuser. My brother as far as I know has only smoked weed. He still isn't the kind of person that needs to be smoking that stuff anyway.

My father used to do drugs when I was younger, and that's what he went to jail for. They found him driving with a suspended license, and he had something on him, maybe coke?

It's tough to have to watch someone go through this stuff.

I think that's the best thing you can do in a situation like that. Knowing what you went through, you know you don't want your children to grow up like that. I think that's a great start to the process of preventing anything like that ever happening to your family. :) You will be a great mommy.

Re: SPINOFF to eating disorder question

My father battled addiction and depression. He was hurt on the job and went out on disability. He was prescribed Oxi-Cotton which ruined his, my mother, my sister, my family, and my life. He went to rehab to get off the pills but the pain was to much. After being off the drugs and feeling pain for the first time in 15 years he took his own life

DH’s mother and brother both battle with addiction. My MIL is an alcoholic and brother in-law is a recovered drug/alcoholic. He has been clean for over a year but still struggles.

My other brother in-law is bipolar.

Because of these mental issue in our families I am so scared to have kids b/c it might be passed on to them

As you know, I have bad anxiety as well. Depression only comes in waves , but it's not as bad as it used to be growing up. I definitely think that seeing a therapist may help me a lot. I hope that your DH can find one and hopefully it will help him too.

I also have a friend who I met on Yahoo! Answers lol He is the nicest guy, very good looking, and an amazing tattoo artist. He told me once in an email that he used to be a heroine addict. It broke my heart to see such talent like his, eventually go to waste b/c of his habit. He told me he stopped and he was clean, but he says he has moments where he just wants to do nothing but binge. :-/ It's hard when you are so far away and you can't be there to help someone. Last I heard he was doing well and he was clean and just got a job at a new shop that opened up. I just hope he continues on that path.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who does not have someone in their life dealing with emotional or addiction problems. Especially with the current economy...I think this can only exacerbate the problems....
