Starting an Aquarium 101 (long)

Original post by bearsbabe_113

At the request of JennRenee, I am going to share with you all my on-going saga of my DH's quest to become, as Michelle W calls it, 'King Neptune'.....

Ok, it all started last week at the San Gennaro Feast when I won a goldfish, I appropriately named 'Chooch'. Winning Chooch made me a bit happy (after the week from hell we all know I had), but Joe was totally beside himself about this fish. He told me to give it back or give it to my friend, but when I almost started crying, he gave in. He didn't want to keep the fish because he felt that we'd get all attached to it and then it would die, as we know goldfish are known to do so soon after getting them.

Let's move on to the next night -- our friends asked us to 'fishsit' their 2 fish that they had won at the feast -- 'Bada' and 'Bing' (wouldn't guess any of us are Italian or Soprano fans, now would you? ) Well, on Friday morning Joe wakes me up when he's leaving for work at 6AM to tell me that one of their fish is DEAD!! DO YOU BELIEVE THIS??? We don't even have them for 10 hours and THEY HAVEN'T EVEN LEFT THE NEIGHBORHOOD YET!!! I tell him that the fish is sleeping, which is exactly what I was trying to do, but that's all a dream at this point. So I check the fish, and lo and behold, there is Bada or Bing dead as a doornail on the bottom of the bowl. And it justs keep getting worse, because at 2AM Joe wakes me up to tell me that CHOOCH DIED!!! Well, this just sent my husband over the edge because this was the reason he didn't want to get the fish in the first place. So now he decides (and here is where I get to my aquarium story) we're going to set up his tank and start a 'real' aquarium. And then on Sat around 11:30 I see Bada gasping for air, only to find him dead a half-hour later. Nice weekend, huh?

I will never fishsit again!!! I went out and bought our friends 2 new ones and I'm happy to say that as of today (knock wood), they're still around and I can't wait to give them back tonight!!! LOL :)

Now to my saga.....

Joe used to have a tank set up about 10 years ago, so he drags me to the basement to get all the stuff out. So up comes the tank, the stand (another disagreement about that old thing) and all the accessories. He takes out the gravel and it's PINK. Not just PINK, but NEON FROM THE 80s/90s PINK!!!!! WTH?????? Not for nothing, but my DH is Mr. Ionlywearblack, so that floored me. I wanted to get gravel that matches my livingroom, but no, we have to use this. Now please tell me, not to offend anybody who has a pink aquarium, but what bottom of the ocean do you know of is PINK???? Last time I went snorkeling, it was blue and green!!!!!

Ok, the pink aquarium, mixed with purple now, is up and running and getting filtered, etc. and is absolutely 100% CLEAR water. I come home Monday night to a 100% CLOUDY/MILKY tank with him all in a tizzy about what a day he had!!!! What the $#@! happened? He changed the pink/purple gravel to natural-colored coral for the sicchilids (sp?) he wants to get and told me it would get clear in a couple of hours. What ever you say honey.

Mind you, almost $80 later, we still have no fish and have changed this tank twice. I come home last night to find, are you ready, NO TANK, NO WATER, NO GRAVEL, NO CORAL, NO NOTHING -- BLANK SPACE WHERE THE TANK USED TO BE!!!!! I very calmly turned around and said 'Baby, what happened to the tank?' -- as I'm looking all over the floor to see if the tank exploded, nope. My poor husband looked like a wildman and just asked me to hug him because he needed a hug! Then I see the tank, empty as can be, on the kitchen table. Joe, what happened? Well it seems he called Fishtown to ask why the tank was still cloudy and since he didn't trust them, he then had to call Petland to double-check. So another trip to Petland and we started all over again.

And still no fish......

This whole thing was supposed to be to relax me and calm me down. I'm a nervous wreck because I have no clue what the heck I'm going to go home to tonight!!! God I love that man of mine!!!!

Thanks for listening to my never-ending saga!

Re: JEN

Oh you can tell your best friend that I (and my computer!) can surely sympathize!
As for driving, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. Suffolk County must suck us in and refuse to let go!! At least I know I'm in good company with your cousins, although I do try to go places... I just never get there!

Re: JEN

This has to be the funniest thread I've ever read. I'm at work and I was laughing hysterically.

As for me, My DH is exactly the same with the driving and the fish. Thankfully we don't have any fish at this point but if we go there, it will be a nightmare. He used to have a tank in his room when he lived at home and it was a constant battle - green, cloudy water, dead fish, etc.

His thing with the driving is stopping to get something to drink. Which drives me insane. He always needs something to drink and then it spills (because he drives like a maniac) or he just leaves it there until I throw it out. He always drives like a maniac when we're not pressed for time and normal when we're late for something.

We have a Jetta too - but it's mine and I hate it when he drives it because he expects it to handle like our other car (a 250 HP beast) and on top of that, he wants another car that's even more powerful. - I ask why? So we can drive through the cars when we're constantly stuck in traffic!!!!!

This thread is toooo funny !

I was reading it as I am eating/reaching for grapes that I have here...

You know when someone tells you a scary story and then anything can scare you at that moment...(Those fun times hearing BOO as a kid ? LOL) Anyway, as I read about dead fish, I went to grab a grape that was smushed, and of course, as Im grabbing it, my eyes are glued to the monitor (cant miss a word!) so as I grabbed the squushy grape, as I read about dead fish, I jumped out of my seat, after all the PERFECTLY round and delicious GRAPES, the squshy one sneaked up on me and freaked me out ! !! LOLLL.

HAHHH. so there, your story SCARED ME away from a squshy grape ! FUNNYYYY.

Anna, you're KILLING me!!!! I didn't know whether to laugh or skeeve the smushed grape!!! LOL How are you doing? Your almost done, huh? LOL :)

FISH UPDATE: WE HAVE FISH!!!! Whoo hoo!!! We are now the proud owners of 2 nasty fish (cicchlids or some such nonsense -- God forbid we get nice, friendly, pretty fish) who are 'freaking out'. And every time I turn around, my hubby has his nose in the tank fretting over these 2 things like a mother hen! But hey, whatever floats your boat.

Yep Debbie, im almost done ! and ready to go !
my belly is as crowded as a subway during rush hour ! poor baby in there !

So youre fish owners again, YAY ! I have to say i am FISH-TANK ILLITERATE ! Although i'd love to learn ! I had a few fish and a water turtle a few years back, and I remember it was always foggy and the wrong temp (woops! ). and they didnt last too long.. I was just CLUELESS about how to maintain the water, i tried and tried, to no avail !
changing the water daily, thinknig i was doing something wrong, all that back and forth probably shocked their little bodies !

one day, i'll try again ! fish tanks are beautiful if kept well !

I'm pretty much fishtank illiterate myself, but I'm married to Jacques Costeau, so I don't need to be!!!

You're due on Oct 3 right? That will be our 4 year anniversary of our fist date!! Info you REALLY needed to know!! LOL But maybe you'll have the baby on my one year anniversary, Oct 6!!!! What hospital are you going to? Stony Brook, St. Charles, Mather (I know my hospitals out there, don't I?). I'm so excited for you!! Just think, you might be holding a baby by the end of this week!!!!

Names??????

Re: Starting an Aquarium 101 (long)

Debbie,
Who's more addicted TO LIW, me or you (you already read my post and I already read your response, ALL WITHIN MINUTES !! LMAO !!

Yep im due Oct 3rd. Our 2nd Anniv is Oct 8th! (gosh that 'DATE' went out the window with this baby on the way, now i see what they mean, that these babies TAKE OVER ! ah, thats ok !

Im delivering at St.Charles, im closer to Stonybrook and St. Catherines, but St CH is who they are affiliated with (right down the road from Mather)..

Names.
John Anthony
Or
Luciana Alessandra

DH's name is John, John Robert, but i have always LOVEDDDDDDD the name Anthony, so we came to a compromise ! and im putting in Harry as a third name for DH's dad that passed away. Also, I want it to be JOHNANTHONY (both names used) hopefully. and whatever nicknames come along, oh well ! but i love John-Anthony. I dont wanna hyphenate either, no dashes in the poor kids name! LOL.

Luciana- my twins name is Lucia, and she used my name as a middle name for her first born, so I will surely incorporate her name in my first girls name.
I loved the name LUCIANO also for a boy, but DH doesnt go for the GUNG HO ITalian names, him being Armenian... so i came up with changing the O to an A, and making it a girls name, Luciana, which will also be incorporating my sis's name. and Sandra is my MIL's name, (DH is her only child, so you can imagine, she wants to kidnap the baby, LOL--joke joke, lets not called CPS, LOLLL) so I put in Alessandra, a name I also love, for MIL. My moms name is Maria, and my sis already used it. so i figured i'd give his mom a chance !
ALSO ALSO, if i spelled Lucianna with 2 N's it would be a combo of mine and my sisters names. but i like it better with one N, and i dont want the kid to think shes a clone of 2 people, LOL, i figure it gives her her OWN name :) and people will hopefully pronounce it right with one N as opp to 2 N's.

ok, so i can ramble..... you asked for it !

Re: Starting an Aquarium 101 (long)

Anna, you crack me up!!! I love your names, especially for the girl!! We've had this discussion before and you know how much I LOVE those real Italian names! My DH is an only child also (for his mom, but his father has 3 other sons), and she also wants to 'kidnap' her grandchild (when it happens -- the woman has a 'drawer' FILLED with stuff she's bought or made or whatever and there's no baby in sight -- I don't want to know about it because to me, it's a jinx -- and now I'm even more sure it was a jinx). She keeps telling me that she'll take him/her back home with her -- um, HELLO, she lives in the POCONOS!!!! I don't think so! And my DH's middle name is also Robert!!! If we had a boy, I would do Joseph Vincent or Joseph something, but he doesn't want a 'JR'. I want Dominic (after my father), but I cannot/will not do his father's name -- Bart (Barthalomew -- however the heck you spell it -- for Bartolomeo)!! Sorry, no can do. As for my MIL's name, her name is Mary Angela, but they call her Mary Ann. I've always loved the name Angela, but his father's wife is Angela and I can't do that! As for my mother's name, it's Alice and there's no way in heck I'm using that either. Sorry Mom!

Happy 2nd Anniversary to you!!! What an exciting present you're giving to each other! That's the best gift ever!!!

Re: Starting an Aquarium 101 (long)

Debbie, Im laughing at how we all have names that we dont wanna use ! Harry is not even close to my favorite name ! But I will do it for his dad, since he was his only child and it means alot. My sis used Ignazio as a middle name, her DH's dad that passed also. ! My dad is Mario, my sis used that as a 3rd name (she has to use all the names LOL).
I dont wanna do 3 names, except in the case of the boy, cuz I consider JohnAnthony one name for how I plan to use it. I laugh when I hear Jewish friends that say they used the FIRST INITIAL of someone that passed, i'm like 'wow they get off EASY !! 'LOL
(no offense to anyone that is Jewish !!)
Our boy (if its a boy) wont be a JR since the middle name will be different, but DH considers a little JOHN a JUNIOR no matter what (ok, let him have that, if thats what he wants to beleive !!)
Maybe we have the same MIL ! MY mil has purchased stuff since she found out I was preg. Shes WAYYYY Overboard in her shopping. she spoils my nieces and nephew as if they were HER grandchildren ! and she treats my twin as a 2nd DIL.. she really is a blessing of a MIL, as much as they overwhelm us with their love and gifts and everything !! (and the phone calls every day to see if HER BABY is on the way yet ! LOLL)...
she has her bag packed to stay at my house while im in the hosp for 2 days...thats not too bad i figured., cinsidering... i thought she packed a bag to move in LOLLLL !

Re: Starting an Aquarium 101 (long)

Anna, maybe our MILs were separated at birth because they do sound alike!!! I love my MIL dearly and she treats me like a daughter and I laugh because she's always buying me stuff and Joe is like 'where's mine'?? awwwww But we're very lucky because have you read some of the posts from these girls who have MILs from hell???

Have a good night and I hope you have baby soon!!!
