Tax Question?

Tax Question?

Are you filing jointly or single? We filed single last night but today the accountant called and said I changed my name we have to file as married...I don't want to because Joe was audited last year and my return would go towards his audit as well. Anyone filing single???

We filed Married filing Separate (long story why)

everything went fine and we got back even more than we have filing separate in the past years.

We are filing single this year. I still havent changed my name with the SS office so we'll enjoy the little extra money for the last time.

See my guy just told me we would get less back. I am so frustrated he is going to see what he can do, but last night we were happy with what we thought would be my return. We knew DH's would go toward the audit which is great and all but if they take mine I will be so upset!

You have to file that you are married, you can't say that you are single. I think people are confusing single and separately.

To answer your question, you CAN file Married separately. You don't have to do jointly. You CANNOT file that you are single.

Do you get more when you file married as single or married?

We filed married jointly. You can file married and separate but i was told that we would get back less.

this is the case. you are married as of 12.31.08 then you have to file married filing joint or married filing separtely.

We did it jointly b/c we are getting back way way way way more $ doing it that way but I was told you can do it separately married. I would look on the IRS website.

We don't know yet -- my accountant is looking at it both ways.

I don't think you have file jointly even if you are married and name has changed.
