Re: Tax Question...Are you girls filing seperate or joint???
This year is Jointly!!! Last year we did it separate because all of my W2's were in my maiden name and I was single back then. In September I was unemployed.
Is there a reason why you want to do it Separately and not Jointly?

separately. When I had my taxes done last year, my accountant told us to do it separately.

We're filing jointly. With a few exceptions, there are more benefits to filing as a married couple.

We will definitely get more money back jointly, especially since I didn't work much this year.

We're filing jointly. We were only not married for about 3 weeks last year and changed our tax forms at work very quickly.

I'm a CPA and we are most likely we are filing together; you can always have it prepared both ways to see which way is more beneficial.
Just be sure that whatever name you have on file with Social Security is the name you put on your tax return or it will get bounced back.

Probably jointly this year since I was unemployed for 6 months. My meager UE payments will bring DHs salary into a lower tax bracket. At least that is what I am hoping for, we'll let our accountant figure it out.

We were going to try it both ways and see which one was better but my good friends dad works for the IRS and she asked him for me and he said to do joint that it will give us more no questions asked.

If you are married 6 months or less by the end of 2009 you HAVE to file separately. DH used to be an acct & he told me this.

My accountant doesn't even wanna HEAR the word married from me. So separate.

That's not true; you are considered married if you are legally married on the last day of the year.
I think the rule you are mentioning relates to you being married but your spouse not living with you for the last 6 months of the year. Have to do some more research.
So if you got married on 12/31 you can still file jointly if you choose to. You don't HAVE to file separately.

We're going to play both sides of the fence, DH's uncle is an accountant, and he'll advise us which makes more sense for us specifically. I don't know yet...I'm more concerned with getting my name changed in time since I have 0 time to do it
