For us, it makes more sense to file jointly.

I'm curious too. There is married joint and married seperate. But there is also head of household. Can we each file under head of household even if i changed my last name? this is really confusing. We use H&R block and i don't feel they advise is so good (no ofense to anyone that works there)

DH's uncle is his account (now mine I guess) and he said we should file jointly. I don't know his reasoning behind it just we he advised us to do.

There are certain criteria to file Head of Household. I took the expert off the IRS website for you:
Head of Household You may be able to file as head of household if you meet all the following requirements.
You are unmarried or “considered unmarried” on the last day of the year.
You paid more than half the cost of keeping up a home for the year.
A “qualifying person” lived with you in the home for more than half the year (except for temporary absences, such as school). However, if the “qualifying person” is your dependent parent, he or she does not have to live with you. See Special rule for parent , later, under Qualifying Person.

We're going to play both sides of the fence, DH's uncle is an accountant, and he'll advise us which makes more sense for us specifically. I don't know yet...I'm more concerned with getting my name changed in time since I have 0 time to do it
You don't have to change your name to file jointly. Name change is not what makes you married. As long as you are married you can file jointly.

I meant more for social security purposes...I'd rather be able to file under my married name, but the way things are going right now I don't know if it's legally going to be changed by then, so then I can't file under it because SS will get messed up.

DHs account has recommended that we file together.
