TERMITES

It hasn't been confirmed from my attorney yet but DH just heard that the house we are buying has 'some termites' by the front door. For all of you ladies that had this done, how common is this? I heard Nassau is loaded with termites and how did or do you fix this?

Re: TERMITES

I grew up in Long Island and my parents had termites and so did all of the neighbors. You have to have an exterminator come in and they drill holes and place some chemical stuff in the holes. We had this treatment once and my parents never had any problems again.

Re: TERMITES

I think 9 out of 10 houses on LI have termites. That's what the inspection is for ... by law, the seller has to treat the termites! We only had termites in the garage, they had that treated. The house was okay because they have a contract and have it inspected every year. We asked them to transfer the contract to us so we can continue with the inspection.

Re: TERMITES

Getting rid of the termites is only part of the issue. You still need to have inspections done to see what type of damage they have already done to the house.

Unfortunately, sometimes the damage cannot be seen because it is behind the walls. Just make sure you get a proper inspection and are comfortable that there is not extensive structural damage.

I have seen houses that once had termites and when you take the walls down, the beams are badly damaged.

Good luck!!!

Re: TERMITES

Our termite inspector found some indications of past activity . Its the norm on LI. You just have to be sure to the homeowner takes care of it. Make sure you know exactly what they are doing to take care of it. From wha I have been told there is often a quick and easy way and the right way to go with termites.
