as a formula...

Dear X

thanks you so much for you wonderful/generous/ or other adj. gift.

describe how you will use it...even money...tell them what you will buy...a house...a rocking chair, the rest of your china, etc

say something about the event...it was great to see you, or we were sorry you couldn't make it

thank for the gift again...

I have been doing soemthing like this:

Dear...

We were so happy that you were able to be a part of our special day. (then explain why)-It's so wonderful to have the suport of your childhood friends on your wedding day (that doesn't sound too good but you get the idea).

THank you for your generouse /thoughtful gift and for coming all the way from ... to be with us on our special day/ to cheer us on!

Love,

blah & blah

Basically, I am not very familiar with the thank you note etiquette, but I feel that thanking the guests for being there is as important as thanking them for the gift! I was really touched that some of our guests flew/drove for many hours to be at our wedding. A lot of friends who I didn't think would be able to make it to the wedding, did! So, I alway mention the gift toward the end of the note, and try to say someting personal to each guest! (That's why I am still not done with my thank you notes

)

We can't thank you enough for your most generous gift and for your warm wishes. It meant so much to have our friends celebrate our special day with us. Your thoughtfulness and kindness will be remembered always.
