I started to read the book and then didn't think it was working for me. Supposedly its all about a positive attitude, which apparently I lack

I started doing positive affirmations every morning. I dont know if they 'work' but they make me feel great!
I want to try the visualization techniques. . .

Hahaha yours too?? I had a wake to go to last night and the priest said, 'There are no good days and bad days. Every day that you wake up and get to experience life is a GREAT day'. I thought that was amazing...
Edited for spelling!

Re: 'The Secret'
At a friend's repeated recommendation, I saw it when it first came out. Its basically new age. Heres my shorthand feeling on it. I think you can take some helpful points from it, i.e.- mind/body connection, how positive thinking can be beneficial for physical, mental/emotional wellness. I believe there is merit in this. And there are plenty of studies to support it. That being said...I personally think you also have to be careful of many points as well. its a very self-centered ideology. For Christians in particular, many of the precepts are anti-Biblical, i.e.- my will, not God's will. And I think unfort some ppl may misunderstand the message/overly confident in it, and therefore may be deceived and disappointed, like if you just believe you can attain _____, you will get ____ or if you believe you can heal yourself, you'll be healed, etc. I don't think this message is anything 'new.' I think its just new age ideology repackaged and trying to come off as new, exciting, the key to the most wonderful life. I have a very different perspective personally. I don't think 'the secret' is 'the answer,' not for me at least! I'm livin for the 'big guy upstairs'!

Re: 'The Secret'
I read the book and watched the DVD with DH(he was FH then). We even went to a workshop at my local library about it. Basically it states that you can 'put it out there' and get whatever you want. I agree with Aug&ofCBBride that it's very self-cenetered to a certain degree. It's all about getting what you want...a lot of emphasis on getting material things that you want. That being said, I started working with some money visualizations last year while planning my wedding and I won the work lottery three times in one year which NEVER happens...so I believe if you apply yourself it does work....

Re: 'The Secret'
Dh and I are firm believers in it....we have been practicing it for over 2 years! I can defenitely say that our lives have changed for the better because of it.......
On a daily basis I can 'envision' something small happen and it happens right away.... some of our bigger goals on our vision boards haven't happened yet but things are shaping up to take place.
ETA: It has helped me deal with a lot of things in my life on an emotional level. I use to suffere from anxiety problems and basically I can control my feelings and emotions much better now and when I feel myself getting anxious i'm able to come out of it quickly. I'm a lot more patient and calmer now as a result!

couldn't have said it better myself my brother wanted me to watch it so bad..when my hubby & i finally did we were amazed at how he grew up in a christian household, yet didn't see it as our faith minus jesus christ. To me...most of the principles i know well already...but i affirm them to 'the big guy upstairs' not 'the universe'

Re: 'The Secret'
i havent seen it but heard alot about it. My mom is really into it because shes been doing this for YEARS before she knew about the secret. She has all these other books on this, and shes funny about it sometimes. My aunt is one of the most negative ppl, and my mom told her she is and tried to tell her to have a positive attitude. She even told her, youre bringing too much negative energy around me and i dont like that.

Okay funny you should connect it to faith! Before I saw the DVD I saw it on Oprah and read about it on the internet. So adapting it for my life, I made all of my positive affirmations TO God. 'God, help me be productive today' 'Jesus, make me a better wife today.'
And then moving on with the visualization I ALWAYS said 'IF You want it, please let me get this item, house, baby etc.' Putting a condition it - which after seeing the DVD is against the whole idea of the secret but I think i will keep doing it my way. . . its just better for me spiritually

yep, things can be adapted that way. ...and in that way, its just prayer! asking for God's will.
and also so much of the secret is focused on attaining material things, which hey are great but should it be the whole focus of someone's life?

Re: 'The Secret'
kind of a sidenote here, but oprah...i have to say, for the most part, i can barely watch her anymore (things w/ Tolle, Marianne Williamson, etc...) shes all about the new age movement and 'Christ consciousness' (not a Christian view at all), so far from anything i believe personally. the secret is tied up in these ideas too in many ways.
