This little boy is AMAZING! (YOU HAVE TO SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT)

This little boy is AMAZING! (YOU HAVE TO SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT)

When I was in the dentist office, I was reading this hero section in people magazine and read about a 9 year old boy. His name is Adam Bender, and when he was 8 weeks old they told his parents he had a tumor in his left leg. On his first birthday they had to amputate his leg. At the age of 3 they took him to his brothers soccer game and he kicked the ball and sent the ball flying. His parents were shocked by this and since then he has been playing sports. He plays soccer, flag football and baseball. He doesn't want to wear a prosthetic leg so he just uses his crutches when he needs to.

I was telling Dh about this and he didnt believe the kid doesn't wear a prosthetic leg, bc i said they were saying he flies when playing baseball and he said he couldn't see how. He said I read wrong so I googled this kid and actually found video of him play baseball. This kid is seriously so amazing and such a great inspiration. Dh was in such shock watching the video the whole time

Here is a video clip of him playing, watch the whole thing.

awww I think its good for kids to see someone else not let anything hold them back. This boy truly is an inspiration. He definitely deserves the recognition.

That was an amazing story!! Good for him - and good for his parents!!

My fave was the blurb underneath the video:

Obviously, this story's been making the rounds for the last couple days, but I felt With Leather should address it because amputee sports stories simply don't get enough attention. Kind of like amputee porn that way. Do you have any idea what a stump can do? I've never wanted to lose my hand so badly. Anyone got a thresher?

you're welcome. He really is, I got a little teary eyed watching him. There was one part towards the end where he is the catcher and a kid drills into him and dh was like OMG But in the article i read it said that all the kids he plays with see him as a regular kid and treat him just like everybody else, which is what the kid wants. So they do to him what they would to anybody else, they see him as a great athlete only, not a kid with a disability.

Oh wow that is crazy! I am actually a tad surprised he doesnt want to wear a prosthetic - but can see he is doing just fine. I am suprised only because I saw a similar story on Oprah and the kid has been wearing prosthetics since he was 2 and is an avid runner now, etc. The kid was the cutest and happiest child and it was such an aspiring story.

I also just got done reading a book about a man who lost his legs and went on to be the first amputee to run a full marathon. He has run several marathons and an ultramarathon (68 miles or so) and tarted a club for disabled runners, etc. Anyway - I got to meet him at our book club meeting and just could not believe what he has been through and how much he has done. These stories make me teary.

i got teary eyed too!

great story.

im on the board of a nonprofit that my friend started for kids with disabilities and im thinking this kid could be such an inspiration for other kids to see. may see if i can post something about him on our site.

yea, i highly doubt that this kid would want them to treat him any differently by going easy on him. he clearly loves the game.

I know I was surprised too since I would also think it would help. This is why DH didnt believe me, he said he can see him playing all these sports with a prosthetic leg but said it was impossible on 1 leg. Maybe since he started playing sports at a very young age without a prosthetic leg he felt comfortable without one and just what he is used to, who knows but god bless this kid.

OH wow that is incredible and must been amazing to meet him.

OH WOW this would be a great story of inspiration for what youre doing. And its so great what you're doing. Like i said in my OP, the full article on him was in people magazine, so maybe you can find the article that goes with it too. Although the video alone is more than enough.
